That’s what I’m saying man, it’s hard to gauge.  Every year there will be some storm or a hurricane and it’s like “all hands on deck, it’s the big one!”, and it ends up being nothing.  Except for one time in 1997 when it was like armageddon and everything got destroyed.

So my head is like, this will be nothing... but one of these days, it’s going to be armageddon.

I have been considering it for months but Wuhan Virus made me pull the trigger: Per immediate I bought a tall freezer, which I'm going to pack with quality foods that my friends, expert cooks, and I will cook together.

Now is a time when its advantageous to have a big freezer full of immediately available nutritious foods, either because you are unwilling or unable to leave the house.

There is a possibility Wuhan Virus will run amok and in that case you want to reduce your public trips to a minimum - or worst case you may actually have contracted it and lack the energy to cook while your close ones likely will steer clear, given that by that time the fear will be strong.

Its a health choice in any case, it will lead to me eating healthier and more economic no matter what, but if Wuhan Virus does break out, a freezer stocked with fatty proteins and veggies will prove to be a Godsent - you can cook the rice, pasta etc yourself from the vat.

Today I got my nitrile gloves and mouthmasks.

You wish, you wish! Almost everybody who has it is STILL SICK. You must look at the numbers of deaths vs recovered. Though recovereds will overtake deaths, at the moment you still have 170 deaths to 133 recovered.  It will get better, but you cannot divide deaths by the ones who got it, because 3/4 of the people who got it, got it 3 days ago and its like a 3 week disease.

We're not out of the woods yet:

Tough call. Hard to say if things wouldn't have been way worse if we didn't make a huge deal out of it. But I agree, at this point i don't think there is much reason for concern. I'll be extremely surprised if this continues to grow rather than shrink for more than another 4 weeks

Has a flu outbreak ever once in history caused a food shortage? If anything it will create a surplus because there's going to be less mouths to feed

Besides you can just re-purpose your swine flu and bird flu survival kits that are collecting dust

For myself im not really worried about the disease itself. A bit for my two kids of 3 and 7. I dont even know how this affects children.

My main concern is mass panic and hoarding and/or enforced curfews and whatnot

So I spend a hundred bucks more shopping now and be good if something were to go down. If not I have some surplus groceries for the coming months

Very little risk and the potential of a significant reward.

The prognoses will only get better once this hits mainland first world countries. We'll average out the China skew for that mortality statistic.

You're going about this the wrong way.

1) if people outside are coughing their lungs out with deadly virus, would you rather strap on a 99% mouthmask and nitrile gloves and go shopping in a whiff of dettol to mask the corpse smell outside, or would you rather reach into your well stocked pantry and fridge, slap a good meal together so the fam doesn't have to leave your house that day?

2) hurricanes, floods, epidemics, stock market crashes, they all have people running for the stores and buying everything they can because a box of macaroni is more meaningful than a $100 bill when you're hungry.

Empty storeshelves are de rigeur whenever there's a crisis, all over the world. They called it looting with Hurricane Katrina but most of it was simply to get foodstuffs to survive.

I read of a kid who died and a kid who had fullblown Wuhan Virus pneumonia and had next to no symptoms. Kids generally are the most resilient in these sorts of crises, its the older people and the risk patients (me!) who are in trouble. 1919 was an exception because it attacked the ones with the stongest immune system the hardest, but Wuhan Virus seems to follow the pattern of weeding out the infirm (me ) more than the robustly healthy.

BASICS IN EMERGENCY FOOD:

You generally need a Starch, a Protein, a Fat and Veggies.

Starch is the backbone. That's easy. Oatmeal, Rice, Pasta, you can basically buy a foodgrade feed drum and just turn a 25kg/50lbs bag of your starch in it, close the airtight lid and for $20-40 + the price of the vat you have a large stock of your starch, free of moisture, molds and pests.

Oatmeal is great because it has 14% protein, lots of starch and can be prepared cold. It crosses over between being a starch and a protein source.

Chickpea flour (Gram Dal) is very advantageous as its a protein (20%!), has plenty of starch and is a veggie. The same applies for split peas.

Cans of fish? Perfectly good protein.

Peanuts are a fatty (50%) protein (30%) and peanut butter a readily accessible source. Un/salted peanuts are often cheaper, and you can blenderize these into dishes. Peanuts are a treat to us, but are an actual food group in the developing world. Learn from them.

Those little cheap tins of tomato concentrate (2-4fl oz) work out to be a pound and a half of tomatoes, so are a very convenient veggie.

Dried vegetable mixes cost a few bucks a pound and are 10x concentrates of the vegetables.

Note how all these stuffs do not require refrigeration.
