First grow attempt report
    #26459657 - 01/30/20 06:08 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

First of all let me say thank you to all who are involved in this forum. There is a wealth of info on here that has really helped me along. I have had plenty of chances to screw my first grow attempt up but because of the information on this board it has probably saved me.

The info can sometimes be hard to find but if you actually read the forum instead of just post and ask questions you can pretty much find just about every scenario possible! I’m a true beginner at this and if I  can have a successful first attempt, anyone can! I apologize If my terminology isn’t correct... I’m still learning the lingo.

My very first grow attempt has been out of an all in one 5 pound grow bag with 4cc of GT.  I actually injected 2-5 pound bags, one of which has been successful and the other has been limping along. I have a feeling it’s contaminated but coloring and smell are good so far.... it’s just lagging way behind the other bag. As of 1/29/2020 the successful bag is in its fruiting stages and the other is still trying to colonize the sub and isn’t showing much progress. They were both inoculated at the exact same time under sterile conditions as instructed on this forum and on the suppliers website for the grow bags.

After the grow bag was colonized, I ended up removing the contents from the bag and putting it in a shotgun style fruiting chamber in hopes of getting bigger flushes. (Tried to post pics but for some reason this website doesn’t accept JPEG files!!!)

A week after inoculating the grow bags,  I inoculated 5 - 1lb sterilized grain bags with the self healing ports with GT (around 1.5-2cc per bag) for my first attempt at a monotub (Again I tried To post pics but can’t post JPEG).

After the grain was colonized, I mixed all 5 pounds of grain with 10 pounds of sterilized substrate (layering as instructed) from the same company for a 2:1 ratio (2 pounds of substrate for every 1 pound of colonized grain).  I don’t remember the exact size of the monotub (Somewhere between 50-60 quarts) which in total gave me about 4 inches at the bottom of the tub.

Instead of using a plastic bag for lining the inside of the tub, I used black duct tape around the outside and bottom of the tub. This was just a personal preference.... just looks cleaner in my opinion and should still prevent the side pinning. Only problem is as the sub shrinks, it pulls away from the side of the tub and may allow light to reach the side and cause side pinning.... I’m not that far along yet so we will see.

As far as the monotub goes, I have seen conflicting info on the colonized sub pulling away from the edge of the tub. Some say this is normal and others say this is not normal. The moisture content seems to be good because of the moisture on the sides and top of the tub.... the colonized sub has pulled away about a quarter inch around the tub. I’m curious as to if I should start misting or just leave it alone. From what I’ve read it’s better to just let it be and be patient as long as it’s not too dry.

Also one concerning issue I’ve had with the monotub was pooling moisture on the colonized sub and also pooling up of the yellow metabolites. After blotting up the puddles with a paper towel I’ve made it a point to increase FAE considerably by loosening up polyfil and fanning.... that solved the over abundance of moisture issue.... now I’m just trying to make sure it doesn’t get dried out. I’m awaiting the first pins from the monotub.... I’m guessing I’m about a week out from that point.

It’s been quite a process and PATIENCE is most definitely the key. There have been several times I almost threw out the grow bag contents because I thought I did something wrong to stall the growth.... only to wake up 2 days ago to see the first sign of pins!  In retrospect, I probably should have let the substrate colonize 3 or 4 more days on both the bags and the monotub  before I moved to fruiting... but all in all I think things are working out well. Not a bad first go.

Thanks again for all the info!

Light isnt the main pinning trigger, humidity is.  The reason for a bag is it shrinks with the sub and doesnt allow areas whee is high humidity(where the side pulls away)

You dont need to mop up that water is helps pinning but again pictures help

I put all of my grows into fruiting conditions from day 1.  It speeds things up and shows contamination quicker IMHO

Working on pics now. The link that you sent converts to PNG or GIF .... neither of which are authorized files. What type of file should I convert to?

i personally hate those stlyle fruiting chambers with all the holes.  if it were me, i would cover up at least half of them with duck tape.

and mist mist mist those cakes.  hard to tell, but it looks like you have a bunch of aborts on that big cake (pics 3 . 4 . 5)

the mono tub looks good.  good luck! :ohboyohboyohboy:

Cool cake rack, but if you remove the foil at the bottom the SGFC will work better.

I have found there is very little you cant do it a mono tub including dialing one in to cut down even on cake misting.

agreed.  I only fan and mist my tubs out of ritual.  once in the morning, once at night time.
I forget who did that write up of how to dial in your mono tub right...
'
hold on, I'll see if I can find it.

Dial in your Monotubs like a BOSS

^^ this is the write up I was thinking of.  AMAZING INFO
