Millet has expanded considerably, what to do?
#26459622 - 01/30/20 05:36 AM (3 years, 11 months ago) |

So after prepping my millet last, I filled my jars 3/4 full and did a PC cycle. My plan is to inoculate them today after work. However, when I looked this morning the millet has expanded almost all the way to the top just beneath the polyfil. What am I supposed to do with this when it comes to the shake? I knew grains would expand, but I didn’t anticipate it all the way to the top because I filled them 3/4 full. There is barely any room between the polyfil and grain now. Should I throw these out and start again? Or still proceed with inoculating? I’m just worried what I’m supposed to do when it comes to shaking to speed up the colonization? It’s raised all the way up just beneath the polyfil. I’m feeling pretty pissed right now and tempted to just throw them away...
Also, there are some burst grains at the bottom, not a whole lot, but I don’t know if that is another reason I should just throw these jars away...

Do a reverse grain2grain. Put a little of each jar into an empty.

I don’t have a flow hood. Open my sterilized jars to the air??? And put some of each jar into another before inoculating?

Make a still air box, and with that type of expansion you should use a spore print or a LITERAL drop of spore solution. I hope it doesn’t tam put on ya :/

White or red millet? Red expands just a tiny bit and only if you don’t dry it off properly after soaking/simmering.

Suggestions? Or throw them away and try another grain? I was originally going to do rye.
I don’t understand what happened, I know grains expand, but I filled it 3/4 full, so if it was to expand I didn’t think that much. Is that normal?

You got a solution though. You need SAB practice anyway. Just pour out a little from each jar. Easier than g2g

So after pouring out should I wipe the rim and lids with alcohol? Is it okay to still use the same lids and polyfil? Or I need to change everything? I will post pictures soon. Do you think that I need to do all this? There’s no way of things working out for me without having to do all this?

Don’t wipe or replace sterile surfaces (anything on the inside of a jar + the rims).
Once you’re situated in the SAB, wipe down the jars. Open them, one by one, and tilt until enough grain falls out. The key is swift movements, while keeping the jar open for the least amount of time. Aim for a 2 second maximum. Oh, and make sure nothing is directly above the jar when it’s open, including your hands, the lid, and everything else.

if the jars are to full you won't be able to shake them and it may take an extra week to finish or more. If you dump th grain out in a sab and just want to use them that's fine to just dump it out and quickly tighten the lid again. If your gonna pc again no need to change anything just make another couple jars so u can dump the excess in those and have more jars. Yes millet expands , I prep my grain before I load jars so I don't have this issue

I’m thinking maybe I should just start over since I have some more millet and dump what I have. How do you prep your millet? I prepped mine also before I loaded, but I did not know that millet expands this much. What do you do to prep your millet?

don't need to start over, u have perfectly good grain there just dump a bit out and pc again. millet I just rinse in a five gallon bucket and dump boiling water on it and close the lid, repeat after an hour ( drain and add fresh water) and after another hour it's ready to dry n load

My SAB isn't completely done yet, I was going to finish it up today, but now I have this to go back and do. So you're saying I can open it in open air and take out the excess and then PC again for 90 minutes? Is it also normal to have burst grains on the bottom?

Oh, dude, unless you’re inoculating with 1 tiny wedge, that’ll work fine. You just need space so you can shake the jars. I’d use them as is and just throw a couple extra wedges in there.

Those dont look too full for Liquid inoculants, they also dont look overhydrated at all to me, if anything a little under. Millet is bitch to hydrate fully. If I was doing ms to grains (which I probably wouldnt since spores are inherently dirty) I would use those exactly as they are. Squirt the liquid up against the glass only on one side so you can see the germ and growth points. Do not shake.

Oh you’re planning to use a spore syringe...
Yikes
You should have done pints then. Spores take forever, even with a normal amount of grain.
I did this not too long ago, but I filled my jars to about 1/3 full. They still took over 3 weeks and only 2/7 were clean enough for g2g. Get with agar mayne.

If you want to waste it all go ahead but the exact same thing is gonna happen next time and it wont matter then either.
They were wrong. Just make sure they dry out asap. You could use a piece of paper towel but I never bothered when I was using polyfil lids. Now I use synthetic filter discs and I dont even have to use foil.
Agar is simple. Click the link in my signature for how to use and to make it just mix 8g agar agar flakes 8g light malt extract and 400ml water. Pc in a bottle and pour in sterile petris or pc in pp5 plastic or small jars for 20 min at 15 psi.

Buddy your jars are fine. Your initial description made me think that they were absolutely full to the brim. Those will be fine for a shake, but still only use a literal drop out of the syringe. The more spore solution you put in the more likely it is to contaminate.

For the 5th or 6th time yes, its not ideal and you want to dry it asap somewhere clean. But no matter wwhat you do you’re using steam to cook jars. Its gonna get a little bit steamy.

Yes that what he means, and you don’t. Burst millet doesn’t hurt anything. As long as it’s less then 20% of the grains that are burst it doesn’t matter. Really the entire jar could be burst millet and it wouldn’t matter, just makes it hard to shake.

You don’t really “Need” to do any of those things everything you did before was fine how you did it perfect is the enemy of good..
the best way you could improve is by not using a spore syringe to inoculate grain directly.

I understand, but right now I'm just working with what I have. I'll have to start looking at agar, but this is my first bulk grow, I've only ever done PF tek. I'm hoping it goes well, I've heard good and bad things about syringe to grain, but it is possible so I'm just going with what I have. Personally, I need a very simple easy agar tek since it will be my first time doing any bulk like this.
Once I take the jars out straight out of the PC when the pressure drops and take the foil off, where is a suitable place for me to put them? My SAB isn't perfect yet, it's still a work in progress, so if I put them in there as it is is that okay with it being boiling hot still and the foil off?
