Burke Dennings said: I watched Midsommar on Amazon. It’s not “fucked up” like Salo or A Serbian Film, but it’s dark (thematically anyway, the imagery is actually bright and colorful for the most part) and intense. It’s made by Ari Aster, who also made Hereditary. He’s not into happily-ever-after endings. I’d really recommend it.
Ok cool, might see about pirating it.

I just can't handle stuff like that these days I guess.
It's pretty effective at cultivating a sense of unease. As soon as it started to get a bit gory I was out.

Ehhh..yeah I'm not a huge fan of gory stuff.
I can do a decent job convincing myself it's just prosthetics and cgi. Especially because I used to work with a little bit of it when I was in live entertainment. But still, it if gets super gory I'll probably end up tapping out myself.
Also I hate horror movies where everything is just going great, but you know that shits about to get real, real soon, if you know what I mean? Makes me a little sad for the characters involved.

There is some gore but thats not it. I cant really put my finger on it but the female lead plays a big part in whatever it is that makes it so difficult to watch

There's also the "you fucking idiot" frustration factor in these kinds of movies.
That movie has great contrast between bright imagery and dark feels like Burke or somebody was mentioning. Some really cool artwork/set design too that you probably would appreciate with your background.

Yeah it's not that the gore is unusually excessive or anything, just kind of put it over the edge for me because of the setup leading up to it. In a zombie flick or something the same CGI would gross me out but not have much psychological impact.
It was a bit later when a couple of characters were discussing how they wanted to stay anyway for academic reasons that made me want to turn it off. Get the fuck out of there!

When I was watching Midsommar, it occurred to me that I might want to leave after the scene at the cliff, but then I considered that maybe it was because I knew I was watching a dark movie and knew shit was only gonna go south from there. If that had been irl, I might’ve thought that there’s no way it gets any weirder than that and would’ve wanted to stick around to see what else could happen. I don’t always make good decisions.
Today I watched Parasite. It was definitely a more original story than Joker or Marriage Story (the other best film noms I saw), and was really well made. The whole time I thought it was a “pretty good” movie, but the third act moves it more into the realm of awesome. I don’t want to say more than that because the less you know going in, the better. But I rate it well.

I thought the academic thing was a better rationale for why they would want to stay than your typical horror movie gives.

That girl's screaming and crying was horrifying though

Just watched the rest
I dont know man. Everyone acts so opposite from what is normal behaviour that its hard to connect with any of the characters. The American guy that is the asshole is actually the most relatable too.
Movie is well made and definitely different. Very bad-trippy in a psychological way

I'm running thru classic noir flicks I haven't seen, mostly jumping between this list and what's on ranker. The last one was "The Killing" by Stanley Kubrick, and it's the third in a row I've watched that involved a heist and girl who tries to run off with the money.
Anyway it's free on Prime in nice quality 8/10.
