I have been watching "Dirty Money" on Netflix, pretty good documentary show about various super rich people getting away with shady shit.

I was really excited to check out 1917 but holly shit was this a dumb movie and it just blows my mind it got a 8.4/10 on IMDB.

This review pretty much sums it up.

Quote:

Superb film making craftsmanship (& mostly excellent acting) wasted on a stupidly realised story. A technique of one long take stolen from the excellent film A RUSSIAN ARK, and adding nothing to the legacy of classic war films.

Others have listed many of the unbelievable coincidences - flights from reality & infuriating deficits of the script, they are correct in their annoyance - the gaps in realism ruin this film & only the in-discerning, ignorant or cretinous would rate this film highly. .. It really is pathetic & an INSULT to those who fought in the war- on either side ! Is this film some sort of joke or experiment in gullibility?

The cumulative effect is to make any reasonable adult viewer think that no-one was competent in the first world war !

How daft is this for an idea- There's an important message to deliver, the Germans have retreated from their trenches, so let's send a pair of nattering numpties to deliver it who have never had any experience being messengers... carrier pigeons & professional messengers seem to have evaporated into cinema-world-conceit. No-one warns them the deserted enemy trenches may well be booby-trapped . The commanding officer has no idea an other officer has been dead for 2 days , even though he's a 2 minute walk away... there is no CALL for a messenger to get through a throng of soldiers, they are sent down a 'one-way trench!'.. they look through a periscope & plan a route-Straight Ahead-, then turn around & travel at 90 degrees still encountering what they just saw... the can't seem to crouch & just amble along... they have no gloves & no-idea how to deal with barbed wire - (the cut hand is then placed on a decomposing body, gripped to pull a companion up & becomes even more inconsistent than the dire cliche riddled script).

Then there's the farce of the rat trap explosion & miraculous unscratched skin (Hahahah- WTF); the farm house farce; milk pail preposterous ; standing right out in the open casually watching a dogfight... then the plane crash (etc!) ....if you can stomach all that you can swallow any crap... within minutes of getting behind the German lines a convoy of British troops in vehicles is ALREADY there.... sudden assertion by our hero -(unbelievable) lack of corporal/sergeant or other higher ranking officer in the truck...dropping him off by a seriously damaged bridge only 5miles away (1hour walk) but can't be bothered to supply him with any assistance... yawn...pathetic German snipers , amazing impossible shots... the stupidity becomes epidemic...

Is this just a fulfillment power fantasy from a dying soldier, some extended comic strip dream sequence ? No- it is serious art don't 'cha know... & a really expensive piece of crap.

Right! I still liked it, but towards the end there I was laughing my ass off and wondering if I was a terrible person at the same time lol.

I'm in the process of watching Squidbillies, a little late to the game. It was recommended to me because of it's stark similarity to some areas of Pennsyltucky I'm unfortunately familiar with. 9/10.

Squidbillies!! I think that's probably my favorite Adult Swim series. That or Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

That reminds me, I still got a few Squidbillies episodes saved on the dvr I gotta get to.

I started Devs (Hulu) yesterday and liked episode 1 enough to be excited about episode 2.

I'm also watching the new season of Better Call Saul. The Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad team may very well be the best writing team in TV. They are so good.

It's A Disaster - on Hulu.

7/10

Fun little movie that feels awfully topical right now.

Devs Is great.  I’m on the 4th episode ,  it gets crazyyy.  Ended up buying the whole season.

Damn

I just downloaded 1917.  I was excited to watch it lol.  I usually rely pretty heavily on rotten tomatoes ratings too.  There are def some ratings I don’t agree with but I think it’s usually accurate.

Like the new Nicholas cage movie, colors out of space or whatever was legit retarded and it’s like 87%.  I watched it tripping and was waiting for it to get good but it never happened.  Almost shut it off.

Queen and Slim

9/10

Such a good movie.  It’s intense and gives you a looming anxiety throughout the whole film, but in a good way.  The main character is the same dude who starred in Get Out.  He always plays the role of every black persons nightmare lol.    This film will heighten your hate for police.

Yeah I really like it so far. I think I'm about where you're at. I need to get back into it asap. Will definitely finish it and am looking forward to it.

I didn't know that the main actress was the same actress from Maniac. Without the wig I had no idea until I saw her name

I'll have to put Queen & Slim on the list

I just rewatched season 2 of Ozark to get ready for season 3 which just dropped. Season 2 is just absurd. In a fantastically entertaining way. Very much looking forward to the new season. Julia Garner is so great as Ruth by the way.

I'm also 5 episodes into 11.22.63. The Stephen King/JJ Abrams mini-series where James Franco goes back in time to stop JFK from being assassinated. Again, highly entertaining. I'm way behind because the show came out in like 2016-17 but I finally just got Hulu. Fun show though and I'm glad I finally got around to it. And the lovely Sarah Gadon in it is of course a major plus

Yeah Ruth is great.

I enjoyed season 5 of Peaky Blinders. It starts with the stock market crash of 29 and ends with the advent of fascism. The show is so postmodern in the way they sometimes strive for historical realism and then bring in references to later eras.

And they brought back Tom Hardy, talking in that funny voice.

I started Peaky Blinders (just the first episode) a long time ago but forgot about it. I gotta get back on that.

Speaking of Hardy, if I had to pick my favorite actor I think it would be him. The man is elite. Anyone remember his FX series Taboo?

They kept talking about doing a season 2 (and 3) but here we are like 4 years removed from season 1. The guy just has too many obligations. Taboo was amazing television. I still check back every so often to see if there's any news of it coming back.

I last watched De Kuthoer (The Cuntwhore) and would rate it a 6.5.

For Dutch language people, it can be found HERE (De Kuthoer - streaming)

We have De Lift, De Aanslag, and now, De Kuthoer

Dutch directness.

The movie is about a woman who writes pieces for a newspaper. She is trolled and flamed online a lot and then something snaps in her. Its called the Kuthoer (cuntwhore) as this is a word used by Dutch trolls, among people.
