A local restaurant I ocasionally visit is ran by a Chinese family. The man of the house is on a trip to China "for 5 weeks" I heard last week.

It could start there.

Guy comes home, gets a cold which he brushes off as inconsequential, serves customers 7 days a week for 3 weeks while contagious...

For sure. My mother in law (74) contracted pneumonia two years ago and nearly died

Ambulance and two weeks in the hospital and everything

I canceleed my trip to Japan. Two collegues are still going (we actualy expect the thing to be canceled). They laughed when I told about buying masks during lunch. After lunch one approached and asked if I could spare a few...

On the subject, my mate was supposed to fly to a meeting in Chicago I think. He goes regularly to San Fran, LA, Chicago, and now NY, but he canceled the trip. He actually has respiratory issues, since he was a kid even, and his dad wore an O2 hose 24/7 the last couple of years of his life, I'm scared for him more than me.

So many people on the face of the earth increases the chance that some pathogen will rear it's ugly head. Nature takes its course and reduces our number to a more managable level.

We will all be dead within a hundred years so what if this, and much of the last, and next generation dies out due to some viral pandemic. Would you rather some scientist come up with an inoculation against death?

Of course. My individual life is far more important than the longevity of our species.

Did anyone else notice that the reported rates of infection levelled off sharply in the last 24 hours? Just 100 more.

What's with that hey? I know sweet nothing about epidemiology, but it's not what we would have expected.

it's currently at a 2.18% death rate across the whole population. Those are relatively good odds, considering it's likely much lower if you're fit, healthy and have access to western medicine.

I was looking at the John Hopkins CSSE page that was posted earlier in the thread. I don't know who to believe now.
