Is There 'A Way' In The Restaurant? 1

The restaurant is a beautiful system to me, so far. You come in, start in back of house as a dishwasher or prep, then you just do that as best you can as you learn the ins and outs of the restaurant. If the place is right, then you have the option of expressing interest and becoming a line cook.
The work seems hard, but it is honest. You have a goal that you must meet while working, and what you do outside of work is your own business completely. You're always doing something, so you tire yourself out and get lost in the flow. Time can move quickly, and even slow days can be fun.
Is working in kitchens just a terrible idea financially? I'm beginning to think that it's one of the few jobs I can picture myself doing because of how much I prefer the people, it keeps me in shape/gives me mental endurance, and it allows for me to put my all into other hobbies. Plus the biggest part, cooking is mentally and physically fun.
I'm at a point where I'm taking a break from university, and looking back many of my best memories working were the weeks and months where I was busting ass in a kitchen. School might be more lucrative, but I worry about getting stuck in a job that makes me adopt a sub-par lifestyle in exchange for a higher salary. Plus I have a hard time seeing myself settle down anytime soon, and cooking is something that can be done and found anywhere.

Working in a restaurant was the most stressful, frustrating & draining job I have ever done. I can say that it made me a generous tipper.

Sounds like you answered your own question. If you like it, do it. Although, getting an education may not hurt your odds either. I always enjoyed working in restaurants in my younger days. There is something gratifying in feeding people

I was in the biz for 34 years, trust me you get burned out sooner or later. I did dish washing to management, fast food to fine dining, even the Yacht club in St Pete Fla, and even one year as a bartender in New Orleans. BUT, if it makes you happy do it, I did end up going back to school at 42yo to get the fuck out. Maybe you should try to open your own little place eventually, but a business degree would only help with that. IF I did get back to it, I would find a little neighborhood bar and that's it, no food but may some cookouts when the weather was nice, bar only. Alcohol mark up is like 300-500% and the main money maker.
