Growing Cannabis (lights)
    #26457718 - 01/28/20 10:02 PM (4 years, 19 days ago)

Okay so i thought i would see what some people who grow some dank had to say about lights

I am pretty sure i want to go the route of LEDs but i have ran into some confusion that, when looking up seems to be people arguing about it lol

from what i gather it seems the elitists are pushing COBs/QB and are aggressively shit talking Blurple LEDs lol specifically viparspectra seems to be the villan here.

the main reason why i want to go the LED route is im assuming it would cut down cost slightly on energy consumption when compared to their HID HPS counterparts...
i also likely will not be working with much space and will either buy or make a grow tent on the scale of 2x2x4 or 4x4x6.

are LEDs a mistake? and if LEDs are a good route to go, can i get some insight into COBs/QBs and blurples? assume i know absolutely nothing about lights because i do not lol

i am open to DIY but would prefer something prebuilt, and since i have never grown before i am aiming to keep cost low as possible, specifically energy consumption! not really looking for a $500 energy bill surprise lol

Screw in LEDs are the best bang for your buck atm. Just tear the globes off for max output. The power consumption to lumens ratio is intense!

If you are working with a small space LEDS and/or Florescents/Cfls are your best bet.

Here check this light out, came across this earlier today and for the price they are asking if i needed one i would buy this.

LINK

Look at the reviews, most the reviews are from pot growers:lol: they included pics.

i have looked into screw-ins and i dont think that is gonna be a route for me as if read unless i get insane deals on the bulbs i will likely end up paying the same for an actual led grow light

that link looks pretty interesting looks like it is full spectrum but idk what im talking about lol. i think it looks better then any blurples out there at the least

i am highly leaning towards QBs at this point a lot of what im am reading is that they are superior to anything els and i could prolly get a killer set up for less then $250ish

i could just snag up that Parfact though it pulls 230 actual watts and that should be more then enough for a 2x2x4

I got one of these: https://www.amazon.ca/MARS-HYDRO-Reflector-Hydroponic-Greenhouse/dp/B07VL8FZS1/

It's ok, just 100W but is equivalent to 600W HPS. Cost for hydro is running about $17 for a 12 week grow.

The thing doesn't make a lot of heat, despite having NO fans! You can grow your plants basically right up to the light without burning. I am using it in a tent with passive ventilation and my temps don't get much over 25 C.

yeah thats another reason i am leaning towards LED over MH/HPS is heat, not to mention it will prolly be about 30% high energy bill then LEDs and i am not sold on yield making up the difference, especially since i havnt really grown before. this will pretty much be a first run for me.
i expect to be capable of producing decent results though
i didnt really think of 420 deals that might be the way to go as i think i am really sold on QBs.
i like that idea and i think i may just get that parfact or something similar then i can at least veg out for the time being and maybe ill even flower before i get QBs and then i can compare results on a second run with QBs in flower

debouchery, couple of questions. do you just veg with the MH and then flower with HPS or do you flower with the MH as well. and have you ever ran LEDs and compared the yield? i am sure HPS will outperform most LEDs especially any blurples but i would be interested to hear what peoples results have been comparing HPS vs QBs or even COBs

No its ceramic metal halide its different then mh and hps i do veg and flower under same light and bulb i used a 4k bulb but theres 3k bulb to which is supose to have more red spectrum but 4k bulb was pretty much the same as 3k just a little broader spectrum it worked well. Used one 315watt light in a 4x4 tent with 4 plants a 630 watt light would be better but the 315w light works an the buds were still pretty dense deffinatly awesome for trichome production.

Never ran leds i was thinking of going the qb route when i started but cost for a good light or even building your own kinda made me choose cmh over led that and the general consensus on yields being better i dont regret my choice at all energy cost was really not that bad i run auto flowers start to finish is about 2.5 or 3 months and i run my lights 18hrs a day .

If you want to fill a 4x4, you'll need about 700 watts of high end LEDs.  4 qb96 elite v2's on two hlg-320h-54a's would be a good fit.  Even better if you can afford 6 qb96's per 4x4.

Thats if you can DIY wiring and a frame.

For prebuilt fixtures, I'd probably lean towards a few mars TSL2000, or spider farmer sf-2000s.  That or an alibaba qb clone.

Watt for watt, QB's will outproduce HPS.  Many growers are finding that it is easier to pull 1 gram per watt, with some even breaking the 2 gram per watt mark with co2 + far red.

think about the money you gotta spend for electricity for lights, cooling, fans

Youre saving hella money still with LED

Most importantly youre decreasing the risk of catastrophe

yeah thats what i was trying to plan for was energy costs but it seems LEDs will only be about a 20% savings from the CMH that was recommended, however if QBs outperform HPS that solid then i think ive got my answer despite having a higher overhead cost..

i can already see myself cutting corners on costs and then regretting i didnt put that money towards an actual LED setup

i dont really know what to expect from a DIY currently but im sure it would be doable and im sure i can find guides for kits and whatnot, the alibaba stuff looks pretty solid and pretty affordable

so far from what i gather, if i go with a QB set up im not gonna be disappointed
4x4 is about as big as i am thinking about going atm but i likely will be starting out with 2x2. idk size is up for debate still. i was hoping i could keep my costs around $300 or less but at the same time i dont want to cheap out and be kicking myself later lol

canna what do you mean by risk of catastrophe? like frying my plants or burning my place down lol

600w qb is comparable to 1000w de hps

then u barely gotta pay for climate control

if any of your equipment fails, your plants may die in flower

drying out/ herming/ mold

Less variables with LED

Ive seen many manufactorers to try to sell led with phrase "this is equivalent to xxx hps" like this one. When you look at the specs from manufactorers page it states that 2"x2" veg or 1,5"x1,5" with 600w hps it is 3"-4"x 3"-4" I know that leds concentrate the light more straightly downwards. But the more area coverage the bigger the garden thebigger the gardeb the bigger the yield as long as all plants get enough lumens. manufactor oh this lamp promises 2.5g/w yield =250g with 600hps you can easily yield 1g/w=600g

yes this is the info i was looking for, climate control is the aspect that i dont want to have to worry too much with lol... i know HPS runs HOT lol and as ill likely be flowing in the middle of summer hot wont work lol.

and yes this for sure, i was aware of the xxxWatt equivalent scam and this clears up a bit of confusion i had regarding G/watt ratio

I think id be aiming for maybe an HP per harvest, so at this point i think it comes down to do i want to wait to get some QBs or just jump in with a halfway decent Mars/parfact/etc

i mean if i actually end up growing something i deem worthy to smoke on then ill likely have a second tiny tent anyways for clones to keep the crop rotating and hopefully get some consistent harvests.

since i am debating between starting with a 2x2-4x4 lets just assume i make a tent at 3x3, would a 200 actual watt LED be able to give me results near an HP? that would be far less then 2.5g/watt.

just trying to lowball expectations so if anything i go in overkill if anything lol

btw thanks for all the responses so far

leds do not disribute light so wide. it is more straight down wards when hps/mh with good reflector gives you wider footprint of light. If I would do 4x4 it would probaply be with 2 leds or 1 hps. Im no expert in growing with leds but used to sell them and other lights. And the feedback from customers tells me that I would still be going with hps if money is issue. if not issue it would be mix of different lights like mh and hps and some leds. But if you want most G for your $ go with mh in veg and hps in bloom if single lamp setup.

I have this in a 2x2x4 tent with a single $65 LED from ebay.  I get plenty to smoke and make butter to last me through until the next batch.

3 weeks into budding here.
