What kind of artificial light do you prefer?
    #26457834 - 01/29/20 12:40 AM (4 years, 19 days ago)

Sort of an odd question I know, but it has me curious.

When it comes to artificial light, which is your prefered type? Is it Incandescent? Halogen? HPS? LEDs? Maybe even Fluorescents?

For me i prefer Incandescants but some newer LEDs looks pretty to good to my eyes. How about you?

ever since reading that incandescant lights are the best artificial lights for chi, i've gone with them exclusively.  I don't need no fluorescant lights messin up my chi :crankey:

As long as they keep tweaking led's to make them more friendly to my eyes , my plants , my psyche etc. ... I'm on team LED. Less energy too for those green conscience shroomer's out there in digi land.

I have a light bulb in my room that I can adjust with my phone.

I can adjust the color, light intensity, dim and all that shit.  Bright white, to soft yellows,  I can have it replicate the color tones of a fireplace.  Or multicolored if I’m tripping.

I can set timers on it so it turns on when my alarm goes off.

It’s awesome.

Logical Chaos, Ill get specific for you. I bought a 12 pack of

OSRAM LED BASE CLASSIC A100 E27 14W=100W 1521lm 200° warm white 2700K NoDim

OSRAM is a brand which generally lasts as long as it promises.
Warm White 2700K is a pleasant light color.
I use 2x 14W in a room because I like ILLUMINATION to aid my eyes, not sit in the shadows.
28W LED = 3042 lumen = about as much light as a long 36W fluorescent tube, but in pleasant light.

At first, putting on the light was like a nuke going off but now I'm used to it and my eyes enjoy the luxury of having a somewhat daylight like intensity. Its the amount of lumen you would pump into an office, why not at home? 28 watt is still a steal.

LED instantly gives you most o0f the light it will give you, no warmup time like CFL and it can be turnen on and off a bizarre number of times, which is important.

a 12 pack cost me about €44 (we have +21% VAT remember?) so $3.85 a bulb of 1521 lumen.

This is BETTER than incandescent and BETTER than CFL for me.

I get the equivalent of 100W incandescent , 25W of CFL for 14W LED *and* its an OSRAM.

Its a well researched choice which is why I make a very explicit suggestion. Lighting is a significant part of your electricity bill depending on which choice you make.

Whether you pay for 10.000 hours of light 140kWh (LED) 250 kWh (CFL) or 1000 kWh (Edison) is very meaningful for budget. If you're paying $0.20 a kWh you're talking $28 of LED, $50 for CFL and $200 for incandescent.

LED and CFL are lights who most certainly pay themselves back many times in their economy.

I'm switching over to led for pretty much everything, including special-purpose/critical applications such as my photographic enlarger in which I currently use computer-controlled leds instead of halogen with dichroic filters. The house has leds in nearly all rooms now and certainly in every place where they actually see significant use. Mostly warm-white, in some places (e.g. kitchen) neutral white. My photographic darkroom has red led strips for b&w safelight and daylight-white leds for regular light and judging of prints.

The only exceptions to this are a few small (5-10W) fluorescents and or CFL's in one or two places where I'm waiting for the current (already energy-efficient) tubes/bulbs to wear out before I replace them with led as well, and a UV contact printer which I made a few years ago using BLB fluorescents before reliable, long-term stable UV leds of sufficient power levels were available. This sees only intermittent use inherent to its application and is unlikely to be replaced by led in the foreseeable future.

So leds mostly all the way, due to the obvious advantage of energy efficiency, but increasingly also because of better flexibility and color rendition than CFL's/fluorescents. Incandescent has been phased out of this household a long time ago; that's stone-age technology for which virtually no argument still exists, even not for critical applications demanding high CRI in which very good led options are currently available.

They warm up the room nicely in winter :awesome:

No seriously, screw out any incendescents!

I went through a CFL phase when the LED technology hadnt matured yet but right now, LED is better in every way.

I have tiny 1W LED bulbs that are as small as the smallest incandescents were, and even after hours of having been on you could hold the bulb and it still be barely warm to the touch.

Unlike CFL, zero mercury in LED.

LED technology has come of age.

Best brands are OSRAM and Philips for long duration.

Easy choice:  LEDs.

Just installed numerous recessed LEDs throughout my house. I have pretty basic models, but they have three separate color settings, including a very "warm" tone that is no different than a traditional incandescent.  It allows me to have a "cool" tone for my home office, and warmer throughout the house.

Easily dimmable.  I can go from soft mood lighting to "you live next to the sun."  They're also incredibly efficient. It's something crazy like $3 to run them 8 hrs day/year.  My mom visited recently and when we left the house she says: "aren't you going to turn off the lights?."  Nope, because its going to cost me $.01 cents to leave them on the 3 hrs we're gone.

I can't see a good reason to not go with LEDs nowadays.

Anything but fluorescent.  It makes me feel as tho I am living in an artificial world.  There was even a point in my life that fluorescent lighting triggered panic attacks.

The only issue I can see with these, and it's not very relevant for most of is, is that of color rendition. Varying the color temperature of leds is often done by selectively balancing the R, G and B outputs through differential driving of separate individual led elements. We perceive the mixed RGB light as white, and varying especially the blue content makes the light more or less cool. However, using R, G and B leds brings a problem with color rendition: the colors on e.g. printed media but also other objects can look significantly different when viewed under a light source with a continuous spectrum (such as the sun, but also incandescent bulbs and to a lesser extent fluorescents). Most people won't notice this unless it's being pointed out at them - but they may run into it when trying to match colors in their interior across different materials or when viewing photographs or printed media that never quite look 'right'.

Note that the problem generally does not exist (or is not particularly worrying) with most white leds that use a phosphor coating to render a wide spectrum from UV leds - very similar in concept to fluorescent lights.

For color-critical cases, pay heed to the CRI rating of the light source used and make sure it's sufficiently high for the application. Again, it's not really an issue in a day to day household situation (until you try to make a photo with accurate color reproduction...)

Like with leds, there are good fluorescents and bad ones. Good ones will have a higher switching frequency than 50/60Hz which does away with the flicker effect that cheap fluorescents generally exhibit. Likewise, there are excellent fluorescents with a high CRI and continuous spectra, but these are rare in homes (a bit less so in offices) because people simply don't know about these things and just pick any old light source and then have to deal with their inherent limitations.

As nearly always, it's not so much the concept itself, but the implementation that makes the difference. Having said that, nobody in their right mind will invest today in further optimizing fluorescent or incandescent technology for general use. Led is just superior to those in nearly all respects, even in affordable implementations that you can buy at your local supermarket today.

LED for house lighting. Mostly warm and some cool white. I have a lot of plant lighting I don't currently use. Mostly straight tube fixtures and a small MH.

i work at home so i have 200 watts of supposedly high cri leds in 5k, 6k, and 7k color temperature in my office. I am somewhat worried about this shit saying the blue from leds will fry your eyes.

the rest of the house has those smart hue lightbulb things so  i switch it to lower color temperature at night.

I would switch to incandescent but i need a lot of light.

You shouldn't be. The light from your white leds is less damaging for your eyes than the outdoor light on a heavily overcast day.

yeah, i saw something about led light being so narrow band your pupils dont adjust or something.  I figure if it was really bad people studying it would have noticed by now, but i never know the long term effects of stuff.

The house we bought was flipped over to all LED lighting, it's really great actually. I have a couple of lamps with regular bulbs or LED bulbs.
