Selecting for short and fat..
    #26456386 - 01/28/20 07:36 AM (4 years, 19 days ago)

At the moment I am confined to a 60x60 tent, I have done two generations of cloning, selecting the short fat heavy fruits, if I wind up with a culture that produces mostly short fattys is it possible to use a shallower tub so I can maximize my space and stack them higher or do monos require a certain amount of headspace for evaporation to occur in the right way? Thanks 🙏

I don’t see why not.

Check out the under bed totes, they’re huge but really short like four or five shoeboxes put together.

I'm very in to this. will be keeping an eye on your progress. I was trying something similar with a short, weird looking GT I cloned but I think it was short and weird due to bad conditions because the resulting clones were normal ass cubes. was hoping for little buddies I could grow out in take out containers without even removing the lid. great work so far!

these are the under bed boxes A.k.a. mentioned:

Mazatepec are by far the smallest ones I’ve grown. I even cloned a bigger third flush one but it still put out tiny shrooms.

Might be perfect for what you want. Tiny but still over 270 wet first flush from one quart.

These are my best contenders for my short fat clones this round..

Okay so here’s the plan! I’ve numbered my clones one through 7. I’m not trying to go down the rabbit hole of endless transfers trying to isolate each clone at this stage, I’m simply gonna clean up the culture and grow each out in its own tub. Depending what I get from said tubs I may then start really getting into the agar. Anyone have an opinion about my plan? Open to change and won’t be offended. Thanks guys!

I have seen short and fat being a result of wetter/too wet conditions

I used to grow Nepal chitwan alot and I never had a large mushroom from those genetics. The opposite can be said about AA+ I've never had a small mushroom from AA+ lol.
I prefer smaller mushrooms by far I hate giants. Just my personal opinion.

I'm thinking weight is still going to be a limiting factor here you can only stack them so high before it becomes a problem but if isolating shorties and using shorter tubs can get you some more efficiency with your space I'd say go for it.

I’d go for the one with the huge cap, and then the clusters.

Itd be so sweet to get a culture that had those giant caps and then spawn it with a clone that did good clusters and see what happens.

I know what your saying, but these are genetic, I have other tubs that are on the dry side if anything producing similar fruits.

Just in case anyone as curious, this is now the third generation of my quest for short fat bois. I have a lot of other projects going right now so haven’t have the time to really document everything as well as I should but just in case anyone was still interested here’s what I’m consistently coming up with ag this point on multiple tubs of the third generation of this project.

Thanks for looking guys!

Looks like short is locked in.

How are you going about this?

Clone->grow->print -> grow and repeat? Or just straight clone?

Just keep cloning and growing out. I may actually take some prints this time. Is there any advantage/disadvantages to either or? I think it’s probably getting to the point where I can try a couple underbed totes and see what’s good.  My other question if someone could enlighten me, if I was to continue this same process for many many generations what would happen? Would I hit a wall genetically? Theoretically could i end up with a true isolate doing this repeatedly, not exactly my goal just curious.

I have no idea but it’s pretty interesting and I’ve got some clones pinning now that I’d like to have be consistently like the original.

I remember reading a discussion a while ago about this and I’m pretty sure they were saying the way to stabilize traits is to grow a clone then print from a fruit that looks the way you want, then grow that print and find the same phenotype and clone it then repeat.

I could be way off but that’s what’s stuck in my head.

Update** still not completely stable. These are second flush fruits from the current generation. The first flush fruits were not a whole lot smaller. Think I’m getting somewhere. Solid stems, these boys are heavy!

Unsure if anyone cares about this thread anymore but I think this is the end, the last generation of clones is reliably producing short fat solid stem shrooms, they weigh heavy as hell and I’m still pulling a qp-hp per tub and they all share these traits here ya go:

At least I followed through what I said I was gonna do even if nobody cares anymore hahaha

Very cool! Please share pics of your flushes before harvest, I'm curious what they look like.
