Best PC games to play with controllers? 1

Just got a decent cheap wireless USB controller and have been trying to find more games to use with it. So far it seems to only work with certain games, possibly due to using a very old driver. So would also appreciate advice on quality PC controllers for reasonable prices.
Was considering the Steam controller but they stopped selling them at some point so was leaning towards a cheap/generic PS4 style controller, the one I have is an older PS2 style.
Want to get a few controllers working so I can play some local multiplayer games on PC, so games that support local multiplayer are a bonus.
Been meaning to get some more emulators/roms and try and get some classic games set up for controller use, but a lot of the games I really want to emulate are hard to get working decent. Especially PS2 games like Ratchet and Clank.
Surprisingly so far the new indie game Hades is one of the few to work with the generic PS2 style usb controller: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1145360/Hades/
That's what I've been playing the most anyways, but it's only singleplayer and still early access. Though amazingly fun for being an early access game with only 1 major update so far, the company that made it has a good history though of quality EA games. And Hades was released very polished for being early access. Already at 35 hours and still haven't beaten the last boss or unlocked everything, but I can tell it will have plenty of replay value already. Can't wait for the next big update.
Might be time to finally get the new Soulcalibur, at least when it eventually goes on sale

In my experience, the worst games that Id use it on are first person shooters like Call of Duty or Battlefield.
Also check out the program xpadder. It can be used to play games that don't normally have the option for controller. And from what I remember I liked playing Dead Island and Left 4 Dead a lot. Payday 2 is a blast as well.

I'd probably go with fighting games like Soul Calibur or Mortal Kombat. Unused to use controllers when I played PS emulators too. Tons of MegaMan and Soul Reaver

Dolphin emulator.
Any gamecube or wii game you choose is out there. Most gamecube games ran great on my 12 year old Xeon workstation with a $15 CAD graphics card at 720p. Wii games need a better card to get usable framerates. Would recommend Monster Hunter Tri.
Also Nesterj? (cant remember the exact name) the NES emulator. Any NES rom you want is easily obtained through a google search.
Also both can be used for multiplayer (will take multiple controller inputs).
Me and my little bro used to play River City Ransom alot. And just a couple weeks ago my buddy stopped out and we ended up playing NFL Street 2 for like 6 hours straight
The Ps2 emulator didn't do to well on my old pc.
Would definitely recommend the old Medal of Honor games, both the pc exclusives and console ones. Rising Sun was pretty fun, especially if you got a buddy to co-op with.
As for new games i have no recommendations i haven't bought a PC in years so i could never play any of the newer stuff.
Although I did play Monster Hunter World on console and would buy it on PC if I had one capable. I'm a big Monster Hunter fan.

Can confirm this. Really fun when you get a competent crew together. The PC version is updated far more often than the console version and has more features. Still had a blast playing it on console.

You mean the first games you'd use it on? Don't have many shooters, was excited to try it with Borderlands 2 but that is one of many games the drivers on my controller seem outdated for, need to try some more troubleshooting maybe.
Xpadder sounds sweet, was looking into controller software a bit but most seemed for specific controllers. Probably should just look into a nicer controller as well.

I think I still have the Dolphin emulator on my old laptop, not sure if it ever got set up though.
An NES emulator is one of the first things I checked out, haven't used any emulators in years. But it seems like one of the main Rom sites I used back in the day (EMUparadise) had to stop sharing ROM downloads due to legal issues
Good thing there are so many ROM sites out there.
Been very tempted to buy Monster Hunter World, keep waiting for a good sale. But I've been avoiding any games with huge files, starting to get a bit low on my desktop. Really need to get a decent harddrive upgrade so I have plenty of room for games and music files...

No the worst. The controller and program have problems synchronizing and causes problems with sensitivity and delays with the game. This is especially noticeable with the zooming mechanic on scopes with sniper classes. you can configure this yourself but you're going to have to have some serious patience. it's just not worth your time and effort in my opinion.

Racing games and action/adventure games are really the only things that a controller shines on. Stuff where you need precise movent on more than one axis (mouse). I used to play GTA on both keyboard/mouse and controller. Controller for car/helicopter/plane stuff, keyboard/mouse for foot stuff (mouse is better at gun handling).
RPGs and stuff, it can really go either or, except for games like dark souls. I find that game impossible on keyboard/mouse.

Ah yeah I guess that makes sense. Still wish my controller worked with Borderlands, but that isn't really traditional fps.

Been meaning to try a crazy fastpaced VR racing game I bought awhile back, might be easier with a controller but damn is it fast paced Can't imagine it in VR.
Actually just reinstalled Dark Souls 1 prepare to die addition, never played any of them much but maybe the controller will help. I wish Ninja Gaiden was on PC

Oh as for controllers, I used to use a PS3 controller. Real pain in the ass to get working though, or was for me on (probably) Vista.

Hmm, I read that PS3/4 controllers were best for USB use. Was thinking of getting a PS4 one or cheaper knockoff. Maybe it was just Vista
Just beat the last boss in Hades finally, took almost 40 hours and 40 runs. Had great luck though and made it to the boss without dying once and with some OP abilities. Died only once killing him
After beating the last boss you unlock different challenges to make the game harder, so excited to try it some more with different settings.

If you are up to fighting games don't listen to mr "Eminence".
I mean these games are not bad, but Tekken7 is the best for sure.
This game takes more time to master and is more demanding, but more rewarding also. Much more dynamic and technical.
It feels good to learn how to punish players using "cheap/easy" characters with Bryan or Kazuya, and take more than a half of their lifebar in a single juggle with a style and skill.

Why did you even have to bring me into that comment?
I never got past Tekken 4. They were fun but felt clumsy to me compared to Soul Calibur and the fighting styles weren't as interesting

SoulCal and Marvel Vs Capcom were always my favorites. Just remembered I think I bought the new mortal combat as well but never played it much.

Shooters generally suck with a controller... On consoles - people will use keyboard and mouse w/ games like Overwatch to get an upper hand over most people using controllers.
Certain RPGs - namely Dark Souls, and Sekkiro Shadows die twice are more or less made with controllers in mind (this stands true for many Japanese developed games). There's a lot of half assed console ports that work better with controllers than Keyboard/Mouse.

Wanted to update that I found the key to using a generic controller on steam, you have to use the big picture mode which I'd never used before. It lets you navigate steam via controller and set controller settings for each game.
Some games worked right away with the generic controller but most need to be set to forced on in the controller options. It seems you can force pretty much any game to use the generic controller, though how well it works seems to vary. But most work surprisingly well.
Playing Garry's Mod with a controller right now which works pretty well for zombie survival. Been trying out random games to see how they play. Now I just need to get 2 controllers working together for co op.

You can setup Dolphin and Cemu for online multiplayer. So you can do up GameCube, Wii and WiiU games online as if you're in the same room. Have done it a few times with my brothers across state lines while on a discord call and works surprisingly well.
A lot of steam games now have streamed co-op and multiplayer as well, so one person can own the game and others can get into the lobby without owning the game on PC.

I use a steam controller for PC. I could never get the ps4 or xbox controller working easily. I think the Nintendo Pro controller will work too and might be a better option.
Rimworld is one of my favorite PC games recently. Most games on steam tell you if they are controller friendly I think. I can make a little list tomorrow.

really? I remember playing final fantasy 12 when I lived in Toronto, so thatd be between like 2006(when the game came out) and 2011 (when I moved), and I just had some Dell, dont remember how old the computer was, might have been new at the time

Too many to list.
Use X box 360 controller emulator to make any controller work, good for getting controllers to either work AT ALL or like an Xbox controller in layout and on screen.
Other controllers are out now that simulate an Xbox 360 controller for use on PC, it used to be the only option. Xbox One Controllers work of course too.

Super Meat Boy is one of my favorites.
I also like emulators. I used to have NES, SNES, 64, GameCube, Sega, SegaCD, Dreamcast, PS1, all working. My computer shit the bed, I moved, and I never got it all going again. Dreamcast was a bitch, but the rest are easy. RetroArch makes this all much more simple, though it supports less console. I still have all the controllers and adapters for each system, which is sweet, because it makes it pretty authentic feeling.
