Differing weights of coir bricks 1

There's talk on the boards of coir bricks taking less water.
I measured out some bricks individually and in 3 packs to see the variance.
nine bricks weighed: 604, 660, 688, 653, 664, 658, 697, 635, 680grams (93gram difference from biggest to smallest)
five different 3 packs(with packaging) weighed: 1956, 1993, 1943, 1940, 1951grams (53gram difference biggest to smallest)
For this reason I like preping bricks multiple at a time for consistency.
Did a quick search and didn't find the weights posted. Hope someone finds this useful.

There's too much variance in the "650g" bricks for my liking. I just get 11 lbs bricks now and cut/weigh what I want. Not gonna lie though, they are a pain in the ass to cut by hand. Wish I had a bandsaw. hah
At the very least, weigh the bricks (which obviously you have done) and add water based on *actual* weight vs. what it's supposed to be (they never are what they are supposed to be).

Thank you filthy I've always known they varied but never knew how much and never took the time out to weigh a bunch and get the data.

fyi I found out the hard way that coir will dull a band saw blade 🤷 yeah I was pretty proud of myself when I was cutting it and the next day I went to cut some wood and realized my blade was jacked LoL. You live and learn.

Yeah I've noticed this too. Anytime I pick up coir from the local Petco I sift through and get the heavier ones

It's as good as a 11 lbs brick of coir can be... like I said earlier, it's a pain in the ass to cut a brick coir that big. I wish it came in a 11 lbs bag of 100g coir blocks.
But haven't had any issues with it myself like you hear about some coir purposely infected with trich or anything. It hydrates at a normal rate of 5:1 with water for field capacity. I dunno what else you can really say about coir.

Search "coir discs" on amazon. You'll find what you're looking for. They come in varying sizes based on diameter in mm. I'm currently doing some tests around individually dry-bagging bulk substrate and wanted something I could easily measure out for a single bag vs. always hydrating a brick which is usually overkill for a small batch.
Like bricks they appear (IME so far) to come in varying weights. I ordered a bunch of 100mm discs and they were anywhere from 65g to 90g each. That being said because of their relative thinness you can easily snap off a piece to easily add or take away some weight.

No problem Gizmo.
Just wanted to put some numbers out theres, now people can see,
maybe the bricks take more or less water. Adapt your practices accordingly, not too complicated or confusing.
