Sawdust spawn mix recommendations

I am curious about your recipes for sawdust spawn for log or wood chip bed inoculation.

I have been using around 3.5 L of hardwood pellets, 0.5 L of a rice flour or bran and about 0.2 L of gypsum with water added for a mix that is slightly dry. Some growers do not supplement with flour or bran, they have different ratios or they make their mixes more moist and so I was hoping to hear about what works for you and how you came to your recipes. The springtime inoculation season is right around the corner and so I was thinking about trying out a new mix.

I wouldn't recommend supplementing spawn. Just use sawdust.

If you inoculate to a log or wood chip pile that's similar to the organism's natural habitat, it already has everything it needs. Adding extra nutrients just opens up room for contamination.

Hey thank you for posting!

I used to use only reconstituted pellets and gypsum but found that adding something extra to the mix helped to reduce my colonization times and encourage more vigorous growth in my expansions afterwards.

It is good that you brought this up because I had a similar conversation with some growers up at NAMA's summer foray this past year. We spoke about inoculating sawdust with grains and LC and compared those to our experiences with plain sawdust-to-sawdust. It was good to hear what they had to say from the commercial or business management side of things, which is not something I think about that much at my low level. For them the addition of a complex sugar is a big cost when you expand it over hundreds of bags.

Have you worked with supplemented sawdust spawn in your logs and had contamination troubles? I know I get a lot more critters trying to dig through the wax when I use the sawdust spawn in my logs and the ants like to carry it away when I make wine cap beds. Maybe it is worth going back to plain sawdust in that regard.

Its definitely helps with colonization times, but I still only supplement when I'm planning on fruiting directly from the substrate. You're also giving available nutrients to contaminants when you supplement. That's not really a concern with sterile blocks, but you are usually spawning to a non-sterile environment with sawdust. That's not to say it can't be done though. Hell, I've inoculated logs with grain in the past and it worked out.

I don't ever supplement and I haven't had contamination issues.

What kind of wax are you using? Its possible the critters my be going for the wax itself.

Maybe I will switch back to plain sawdust since it sounds like I am playing with fire. This spring I am going to try some old logs from a plug inoculation that did not take, so using a nutrient could be problematic with all the other competitors they will have to deal with.

Tell me about the wax my friend! Everything is sealed with a cheese paraffin wax now but there were similar nibbles with beeswax also. There are a lot of arthropods and wildlife in the area though and so I didn't really think it was surprising.

I've heard its the worst with bees wax. Someone once told me they even found a line of ants that found their way into their fridge to get a hunk of beeswax.

Cheese paraffin should be fine. That's what I use on mine and I haven't seen any bugs getting in it.

If that is the case it is a good thing I made the switch. Beeswax was more expensive and so I guess that switch was double good.

What is your recipe for sawdust spawn? I have been rehydrating wood pellets to the point that they're fully dissociated but not so wet that any water escapes when you squeeze them. It seems like my mycelium colonizes the bags faster when the mix is a bit drier. I mostly use 0.2 μm filter patch bags, so they don't dry out.

That's exactly what I do. I used to have it calculated how much water to add x amount of pellets but I can't remember anymore. It can differ brand to brand anyways.
