Straw isnt used very often since grains are easier to control/mix. But some people still use straw.

My personal success with oysters on straw has been narrow. Though a lot of people swear by it. I had much better success on wood chips, and sawdust.
If you insist on straw I suggest running it though a leaf mulcher, or Lawn Mowing it.

Also. If a method is highly successful, it gets a lot of attention. And if its not, then if falls by the wayside. Sooo...that might be an indicator as well.

dung and straw is still used a shit ton.
im going to use dung with straw for cubes and straw for oysters.
im going to put some colonized oyster agar into 2 4lb straw bags.
i know i should prob use grain to inoculate the straw but im curious to see how the mycelium takes to just straw. i hear good things.
straw is good for oysters cause they eat wood stuffs.
just straw for cubes isnt right. the straw is for adding aeration to dung cause dung can be crazy poo brick alone. unless you use horse poo. which is already good to go. maybe i just use straw for oysters and go shovel a bunch of horse shit.

Good point. Since straw isnt very popular, theres not a lot of threads on it. It seems like more work involved compared to other substrate types.
But OP is set on Straw so thats the direction for OP.

ye im only set on it for now, to see how it comes out. i hear REALLY good things lol. im gonna colonize a 10lb bag of wheat berries with oyster and then use that to inoculate a crap ton of straw. ill take pics when everything rounding out.

Idk why you would use straw or where, especially for cubes, but here: 1) mix powdered dung and straw in large bowl with a bit of vermiculite 2) add water until you reach field capacity 3) load into quart jars but DO NOT PACK 4) get a probe thermometer 5) put foil over the top and screw the jar bands on 6) place probe in the center of one jar 7) heat jars to 140f for 1-3 hrs
Just pasteurize the mixture and if your culture likes it it will grow on it. If not it won’t. It’s not really the optimal method for growing cubes. Just use grain and coconut coir/pith

I think this is pretty much right. I wouldn't powder the straw idk if that's even possible but instead chop it. Depending on how much straw you use you may have to soak it separately in water to hydrate. Some dish soap can be added to the he soak water for a wetting agent. I'd pasteurized a little higher than 140 I try to keep it at about 153-160f for 1 hour. No longer. I dont soak my straw seperate but I also dont use pure straw I think I'm using like 25 percent maybe. I use one packed quart to like 3 or 4 quarts compost and sometimes coir and or verm. I have no set recipe.

Ive just started growing oysters on straw using the bucket tek Been using the cold pasteurizing method of simply adding calcium hydroxide to water then adding straw-leave to soak for 12-24 hours-drain-leave straw to drain/dry for a hour or so then layering into bucket with 12mm holes drilled every 15cm or so. From what I read sawdust/soy hulls/woodchips may give better results/yields-And cold pasterizing is not very reliable doing larger amounts but Im just doing it this way to get a feel for them with what I have locally available and using what I have round the house. Touch wood havnt had any contam problems yet and have been eating loads of oysters.
Grown cubes/pans on unpasteurized straw/dung mixes outdoors-they love it- Wouldnt try this indoors thou without pasteurizing.

You can cut a hole in a 60qrt tub put a weed eater head in it. Load straw, close lid and go to town.
Then add really hot water and dish soap.. I think this is RR's method. It's been years...
Then let the straw sit in the hot water for 1 he and load into bags.
Pasteurize your dung. I would lay it out on a tarp and let it fully dry in the sun, then break it up and food process it and mix it with some vermiculite and bag it.

for cubes im using it instead of vermiculite. poop and straw, one of the best substrates for cubensis.

yea straw is really good for oysters it seems. i mean youre eating a bunch so its working.
for vubes im going to make a suitable substrate by putting dry cow or horse dung (whatever i have available at the time of need) with straw and get the whole thing to field capacity. then im putting it in oven bags in the pc for 2 hours at 15 psi. after that its just a waiting game. the worst game ever

chop straw into 1 to 3 inch pieces or toss in a blender. bring it to field capacity ( can even dye it) load into jars in your pc bring cold water halfway up the jars and crank the heat, once the water starts steaming and trys to bubble shut the heat off and put the lid on the pc. after 20 minutes my temps are about 160. these temps will hold for a couple hours in the pc , check after 60 minutes but I never need to add anymore heat. tip: pack the jars tight

So I have a couple questions. Are you soaking to get to field capacity or just adding water to chopped straw? Also how are you measuring temps and do you monitor core temps at all?

i figure its like spawning to sterile coir. more nutes tho thats for damn sure.

nice, what did you spawn it with?
also got any advice on what to do when waiting on mycelium? i moved to peru and growing mushrooms is a big part of my prosperity. im getting my rotations and work started here. its also colder than what im used to growing in. thinking about getting an incubator. its like 60 at night 67-70 day. mycelium is slow.

Cron is a straight guru with the fungus, but I’ve gotta ask...
Why not just use coir? Obviously it can be done on straw but cron has a ton of experience and really knows what he’s doing. Is there an issue obtaining coco coir?

Dung and straw over coir ever day. Coir is hard for me to get here yes. I have a lot experience using coir. It's nice. In my opinion I'm going to be using a far better substrate. dung loving species getting it's hand on dung.
Also for crying out loud I'm using the straw mostly for OYSTER mushroom.
Vermiculite doesn't give nutrients (ok yea sure some) also it's not used for nutrients. It's used for moisture control.
Straw in dung is used for...
Moisture control, air, fluffy.
Horse shit is superior to cow shit.
Like I said earlier maybe I just do an experiment with one batch of cubes on just straw.
But also maybe I just find some horses and go to town.
Straw is good for growing mushrooms that eat wood. I could even use fucking nut hulls. wheat hulls. Leaves for fucks sake.
God sometimes I get a cancer in my eye reading these forums.
