Help with Identification (Amenita's)
    #26455564 - 01/27/20 04:54 PM (4 years, 21 days ago)

Hello group,

I am having trouble telling the difference between amanita muscaria and amanita gemmata or possibly even amanita muscaria var. formosa. I've certainly identified a muscaria with a red cap but recently I've been seeing what I think are look alikes. I am very hopeful the muscaria variety can produce golden/yellow caps. I've found several maturing caps and many erupting near by and their all a yellowish gold color with the spots.

Can anyone share some knowledge with a relatively new hunter?

Where In The World Are You Located?

The Mushrooms In The First & Second Picture Could Possibly Be Amanita Pantherina. The One In The Third Picture Looks To Be Amanita Muscaria.

Wait For A Trusted Identifier To ID Your Finds.

Far right is Muscatine. First two are probably pantherina but could maybe be Regalis depending on where you are.

I'm in the Pacific Northwest. The 2 left pics are from Tacoma WA area and the far right pic with the red cap is from the Washington coast.

I agree with the above. Far right is muscaria and I think on the right is pantherina.

I sure do miss the pnw!

Thank you everyone.

I should have picked that damn muscaria but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It was too cool of a find to be selfish. However, if I ever come across Psilocybe stuntzii's again, I won't be so selfish.

Ahh, memories of picking blue ringers during PE in jr high

You have Amanita muscaria ssp. flavivolvata.

Amanita muscaria var. muscaria is only found in one U.S. state and that's Alaska.

Amanita muscaria ssp. flavivolvata is the red capped species of the lower 48, but the range overlaps with Amanita persicina in the Southeast U.S. so you can easily confuse them.

The 1st 2 could be Amanita pantherina
