Successful germination or mold?
    #26455472 - 01/27/20 03:48 PM (4 years, 2 days ago)

Hey guys! I'm running my first grow and the spores I inoculated into my jars last Tuesday started to show what I expect to be the first signs of spore germination today but I'd like to be sure it is in fact mycelium and not something else. So could you guys have a look at this pics?

Before you do might be important to mention I choose to go ahead with a modified version of the PF Tek. The modifications I made are not my own. I just followed some indications RR left in some of his old posts I read using the search function. So this is what I did:

For 12 1/2 pint Jars (240ml):
1440g of Vermiculite
720g of Rice Bran
720cc of 25% coffee + 75% water
25g Gypsum
2 hours steam sterilization

After sterilization I left the jars to sit for 3 days. I figured that if the jars showed signs of contam before inoculation the problem would be the sterilization. So after 3 days and after checking the Jars were ok for the next step I proceeded with inoculation using a SAB.

Syringes were already prepared a week or so before using boiled distilled water.

So where I'm living now it's winter and a bit chilly even inside my room, cause we don't use central heating. Temps inside are around 64F. I figured that if I left the jars to colonize at this temperature it would take forever. So what I did is I'm using my SAB to store the colonized jars. The SAB is on a small table. And underneath the SAB on a bottom shelf, I have a space heater connected to a thermostat. The temperature probe is placed inside the SAB. Whenever the temperature inside the SAB is below 71.6F the space heater is turned on automatically and the temperature goes up. When the temperature reaches 75.2F the space heater is turned off. So the temperature inside the SAB where the colonized jars are stored, is kept at an average of 73.4F. Considering that the inside of the jars will probably be around 3F hotter, the substrate temperatures will be around 76.4F. Which according to RR is fine for the mycelium.

So I hope this information can aid you guys in giving me your input on what exactly is growing inside this jars.

Here are the pics.

This one's the best looking Jar. I inoculated 4 jars with this variety which is Thai Pink Buffalo. Looks like regular mycelium to me. What do you guys think?

This one's the best one I have from the 4 jars I inoculated with spores from Trankskei variety. This looks like mycelium but comparing to the TPB jar, this one looks more wispy and cottony. Is it mycelium or you guys recon it could be mold? This type of cottony white stuff is seen in all other 3 jars, and aligned with all inoculation holes so I think there's a good chance this is mycelium and not some mold. Yes? Also does the looks of the mycelium vary from different cubensis varieties?

This is one is one of 4 jars I inoculated with Mazatapec spores. This one looks also a bit wispy and shows less of the white stuff than the previous 2 jars I showed. The other 3 jars are not showing any sign of mycelium. Maybe one of them is. There's a very small white spot bellow an inoculation hole.
So if this is in fact mycelium the reason because it's behind the other jars might be because the Mazatapec syringe I used had a weaker concentration of spores. The print I used to make that syringe was very small and had few spores. You agree?

So let me know your thoughts on this. Any advice or ideas on what I should have done differently will be welcomed.
