Best for rye berry prep?
    #26455404 - 01/27/20 03:06 PM (4 years, 2 days ago)

I'm going to be prepping my rye berries tonight and leave them for a 24 hour soak. How much gypsum should I add to the soak? I've read a tablespoon, and I've also read things that say a quarter cup. A tablespoon and quarter cup are a considerable difference. I'm using 2 quarts of dry grain.

Also, after my 24 hour soak I was going to go straight to boiling it for 10 minutes, and then drain and let it steam off. Or should I rinse again after the 24 hour soak before boiling?

One tablespoon of gypsum will be fine for the soak. You can add more to the substrate later, when your spawn is ready.

If you rinsed the grains before soaking them, no need to rinse them again before the boil.

I add to just boiled water, cut heat soak ~2 hours, drain and spread out to dry on a towel  for about an hour stirring them occasionally. Works out perfect every time, I have never used gypsum or soaked any longer than overnight and mainly do that with millet.
