I've not previously had access to jiffy mix, this is my first attempt with it. Can someone verify that I've purchased the correct kind.

Yeah I use that right from the bag.

It helps to pick out the little sticks and break up some of the chunks by hand.

Also just got my first shoebox with zero side pins!!!

Moving on up in the world.

Nah I did at first but then tried it from the bag when I was short on time. I’ve only used it maybe ten times from the bag but so far no problems.

I also mix in extra verm just cuz I have a ridiculous amount of it.

Usually I get a shoebox mix the jiffy and verm and spray it With the mister while mixing it until it’s pretty wet, then case it and spray it down again.

My leveler... friction sticks pinch a piece of plexi... can adjust. pretty slick.

These are my bags with MS golden teacher... I hearing that cubes if clean, are only translucent. These start out clearish... but later turn more white. Day 7 from LI syringe, half an agar plate each. Are they bacterial because of the white?

Any reason not to pack substrate when spawning? I packed the shit out of a shoebox a while back while leveling and I didn't notice much difference while fruiting but I've always tried not to compact the sub while leveling.

I think people advise against packing super tight due to anaerobic bacteria.

Also I’m super hip to pasteurization, I do it for all my coir. I guess when my op is back up I’ll get used to using manure for cubes and then onto more contam-resistant species.

coir doesnt really give you the best idea of weather or not your properly pasteurizing your sub because it doesnt require pasteurization.  try with straw or manure to get a much better idea.  too low and too high of temps = contam.  you wont know if your slightly off with the coir cause its so fail safe.

a 12" ruler makes a nice leveler for most tubs/trays.  I dont use it myself but my friend with arthritis and carpel tunnel cant make a level sub any other way

You are right but my habit of spawning sketchy spawn has given me the idea that coir isn’t as resistant as everyone think.

I’m also used to pasteurizing manure because I ran 4 trays of mislabeled pans that ended up as cubes, and before coir was using solely store bought manure.

So just for the science of it, ive been working with woodchips and for sure mycelium runs faster on fermented chips than straight chips.  Im sitting in the airport off for 6 weeksbut im curious as to what leaving coir in water for 2 weeks to ferment would do for speeds.

also

It would be interesting to have a shoebox competition, from 1 quart inoculation to first fruit speed comp using whatever method you want.

trubblesome has a pretty impressive speed run in the Let's All Grow Mushrooms 2020 thread.

edit: also note that's from spores - fruit.

Damn that’s fast!

My gt seems to have abnormally thick fuzzy myc, not sure if it’s a gt thing or just my cultures.

Mine were very tomentose on plates so my theory is that’s why the jars look like they do.

In other news, I had some very shitty zoo med coir the other day, and when hydrated It didn't uptake the water... I squeezed nearly a gallon out by wringing it with my hands. It was still wet and dense. Then this 9 days in....

Doesn't even look to be from the spawn.... just super shitty coir that even my improved bucket tek couldn't help.

thanks footpath. I harvested half the first flush this morning. ~14 days from spawning 1:2, 27 days from streaking. I think I figured out why the fruits were so skinny, and it's probably also why they were so fast. I moved some stuff off the bottom shelf of my shelving unit where the shoebox was and realized it was pretty warm to the touch. It sits right above where the heat duct runs, but I didn't realize it got that warm through the subfloor/flooring/plastic of the shelf. ambient temps in the closet are around 70-72. I finally found my infrared thermometer and pegged the surface of the bottom shelf at 78

:facepalm3:

second shoebox has some more substantial fruits, it's been on a higher shelf. IR thermometer says temp at surface is 71. I'd prefer around 68 for some fatter fruits.

Ok I am doing this... But let's use some wine making additives for killing all the baddie.. going to supersoak a brick and add potassium sulfite to kill baddies. Let it off gas for a day or two and mix in some fermimax yeast nutrient and then some yeasts and let sit for 5 days. Then we can drain the coir and try mixing. I wish I had some clone jars already made to test the sub speeds with.

IME density of clean myc due to either slow growth, strong rhyzo habit, or time in colonization is what makes it look white.  Water content of the sub also affects this.

OTHO whispy myc expands without filling in first so it looks translucent.  Rhyzo myc starts out white and stays that way.  Bacteria changes the habit of growth because the myc is fighting the infection so you see wetness and general stunted appearance.  I tend to use the smell test - if it smells good it is good.

Dunno if that helps you at all but those bags look fine to me.

Thanks! Thats all interesting. I'm all sensitive because I believe I had a very subtle contam on my transfers for a few years... and my plates looked good, my bags grew out okay, recovered from shakes well, and always smelled fine. But man, mold city around my first flush. So now I'm skeptical that I have clean agar and LI technique. And when I heard that healthy cube mycelia is ONLY translucent... I got a bit sad that I'm not there yet.
