This is looking -bad- especially since there is a 2 week period where one is asymptomatic yet contageous. That's the kiss of death.
With the other viruses, people appearing ill were shunned like lepers, and were too immobile to move around, here you have people with full mobility, asymptomatic, spreading it.
I stresss: surgical gloves and an adequate mouth mask go a long way, the same as with influenza.
I have family in Beijing, they have stocked up on food, drink, supplies, mouth masks the works, they were wisened up by the SARS scares etc and at the first sign of trouble entrenched themselves to bug in.
I dropped the following message on my African outreach project:
Quote:
A GREAT DISEASE MAY BE COMING YOUR WAY
A virus has broken out in China which is spreading rapidly and which appears to both spread like the flu and cause serious illness with a serious risk of death.
It is called Coronavirus 2019-nCoV and at present has spread to other countries, including in America and in Europe.
Because the Chinese are very active all over the world, including Africa, and because the disease is infectious, it might well be possible that it will spread to most of the world, fast.
What you can do at this point is tighten the bonds with your closest friends, and, if possible, to add to the food and supply reserves of your home, if necessary,in preparation of what might become a period of crisis.
Having an airtight vat of rice or a similar staple food, and added extra foods that can be preserved for a period of up to a year or more, is highly recommended.
It is important to work together with your closest ones on this, so that you can help one another should there indeed come a great epidemic. It is also important that you, if possible, take extra supplies into your home, as a precaution that you and your family have what you need.
You hear it here, first, soon you will hear it everywhere.
May God have Mercy on the Righteous.
Many Africans are dependent on cheap Asian rice and the Chinese are all over that continent, typically more affluent ones involved in large projects, so they are likely to get (possibly contagious) relatives fleeing at them.
I thought I might as well alert them.
Since it is a spiritual group:
Quote:
Please realize that this is a very early warning about a potentially very rapidly increasing problem. In the past 10 days, the number of infected has increased more than sixfold. The most insidious aspect about this virus is that people may be infectious to others two weeks before symptoms appear that identify them as sick.
Bear in mind that large parts of Africa are dependent in part on the import of Asian rice, and that if this epidemic becomes severe, people in Asia and everywhere will start hoarding food, leading to increases in price and decreases of availability in Africa.
It is prudent to have an airtight vat of your staple food on hand, where you can store it safely from pests, so that your family has at least a basic food to fall back on in a time of crisis.
Keep calm and take well thought out, rational decisions.
This may not become as bad as it might be - but we will not stand for not having warned you, in time, when the opportunity was there to do so, at the early dawn of the potential crisis.
One is reminded of the one named Noah in the Bible and Nuh in the Qu'ran - who foresaw danger, warned others and made his preparations for his family and those who would listen.
To emphasize that this story unites both Christianity and Islam at its core, I will give Islam the honor of reciting it - because the God of All Things brings Crisis upon us, so that it may make us overcome our differences and find solace in each other's arms. The Brotherhood of Man needs to set its differences aside and UNITE against this Calamity.
Bible: Genesis 6 et al. Qu'ran: Surah Nuh

Damn, I'm just a few hours from Toronto. Hopefully it doesn't get too bad, we've got more than a few members from there. The SARS outbreak stayed pretty localized from the most part but this is worse. Hopefully I don't have to take my kids out of school, they always go crazy when they don't get to play with their friends.

Guys, look at today's spread:

Its suspected to be present on all continents now.
Note how its all over the map.
Better do that groceries run after all guys. Its winter, you'll be happy to have some good food in your home anyway. The surgical gloves, mouth mask and bleach are an extra.

I have decided to Pub Sticky this thread for the following reasons:
-its a corona virus like SARS with probable high lethality -its contagious in the pandemic range R0 3-5 -people are contagious well before they are symptomatic -human to human contagion across 4 successive patients documented -number of confirmed cases rose 61x in the past 10 days -it has presumably spread to all continents but antartica -confirmed in north america, europe & australia (our main demographic)
Let us hope that it will be a contained catastrophy like SARS, but judging from the parameters this one will be a more widespread one.
We are a harm reduction site so I deem it intelligent to bring the topic to the Pub's attention as-is and let the community draw its own conclusions.
It will also soon become a VERY BIG topic which will lead to MANY Pub threads if we don't centralize it to a single topic for all discussion. This does not just hinder other discussion but will also lead to missing info because its smeared among multiple topics. Lets put all our eggs into one basket.
We got a contam guys, and it looks to be a bad one.
Every generation experiences a "big pandemic", usually influenza.
This might become ours.

Im glad im not on a cruise ship right now.
Every time I am on one i'd say 15-20% of the guests are Chinese.
At some point someone always gets sick on the ships, this time it may be coronavirus

HIV is the worst candidate for a bioweapon. It is extremely hard to transmit and It has a multi year latency.
No it is not extremely hard to transmit HIV, and this complacency coupled with the new drug "Prep" is causing more infections to happen. Wrap it up people, gay or straight. I would suggest having two HIV tests within a 6 month time (every 3 months) at least before having unprotected sex. If you want to be more careful do the testing for 1-2 years every 3 months. It can stay undetected for many years, but that is not very common. Me and the now husband did 2 tests in 6 months before we had unprotected sex. I have not been with another person in 5 years, and neither has he.

Russians are very good with that, but in the time the vaccine is developed, as you know with flu, it might well be that the then-dominant strain is no longer susceptible to the vaccine because of mutation.
Something for the grocery list, it sounds too silly for words, but get a few bags of cough lozenges. Its a primarily respiratory illness and cough lozenges are basically oldtime OTC meds to help ease breathing and clear the lungs. Coughing and breathing difficulties as well as high fever are prominent symptoms, so it might be a gpood idea to have a strong aspirin such as ibuprofen or naproxen which decreases fever as well as inflammation responses. Tossing in a diphenhydramine will only help, as with influenza.

Good luck finding a port if your cruise ship is struck with coronavirus. You'd have to moor offshore and medical personnel will come to you.

I was thinking the same thing they'd have to stay out in the ocean until its ok to come in.
Lots of Royal Caribbean cruises leave from China I wonder if those are halted right now.

had dreamed of a bio-hazard infection a year ago, I would listen to this guy and prepare good for 4-8 weeks consumption before mid march incase of 4-8 weeks of societal service interruption and civil unrest.. had this deep feeling after a trip recently, that in a month or two it will reach global scale for that great BUMP.
