My first grow!
    #26450612 - 01/24/20 07:16 PM (4 years, 23 days ago)

Hi,

I'm welcoming myself to this forum with a post and a first step into the mushroom world!

I'm about to embark on my first attempt at growing psilocybin mushrooms. I've done a good bit of research and have opted for a grow kit for my first attempt, I hear combining your own ingredients from scratch is better but that will be my second attempt, for now I'm testing the kit. I've opted for a grow box and psilocybin cubensis spore syringes from cylocybe.com, easy right?

I don't want to desrespect the process and potentially make an avoidable mistake and discourage myself from the beginning, so any useful tips would be very helpful! Is there anything that I should keep in mind that I might not get from the standard instruction guide? I'm sure seasoned growers have a lit to say.

I'm excited to embark on this journey and plan on being a part of this community for a long time

Not sure you're going to get many (positive) responses on the grow kit.

We also won't know what the "standard instruction guide" from a random, non-Shroomery sponsor might instruct.

Cross your fingers, take any tidbits you can learn, ask specific questions, and start researching for your next awesome grow.

Good luck and have fun (at least)!

Just follow whatever tek you will be using. Don’t deviate or try anything special lol I started my first grow about a week ago. Followed the pf tek to the letter and have 12 jars colonizing nicely. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

I'm aware the grow kit isn't the popular choice and I will definitely be doing my own grow next which I'm excited about. Since this is completely new to me I'm using the kit as a baseline experience to draw from before I get crafting.

So here's a specific question (Maylink)...

How do I know when to pick the mushrooms? I know there's a fine line between a ripe mushroom and one that is starting to spore, any signs to look out for on a first attempt?

Best time to harvest is right when the veil breaks before they drop there spores (secrete black stuff all over)

Agree with this.

Harvest right after the veil breaks and as they start to open up.
Before spores drop, since they’ll mess with your next flush and don’t taste very pleasant.

At least you’ll have the opportunity to compare your kit to what you end up creating next, and you’ll learn a lot no matter what.

Growing mushrooms in any way is absolutely wonderful.

Oh and don’t hesitate to post pics and ask questions (even with the grow kit).

The Shroomery is always here to help!

So I love to go on about grow Kits, So I have decided to read the Growing Instructions from Cylocybe for fun. Below are quotes from their website.
"Detailed:
1. Get organised
Choose a space to use as your 'lab' - An ideal room to use will be draft-free, such as a small cupboard. Kitchens and bathrooms are generally not suitable because of the increased risk of mould. Take everything you will need into your lab at this point, you want to keep air currents to an absolute minimum - close the door and keep it closed until you are finished! - to lower the odds of contaminant spores getting into the MycoBox.
"

(I worry about Mould too)
"Never wipe a needle with an alcohol wipe - this will only sanitise it. It's best flame sterilising for proper sterilisation."
(Seems like spell check isn't a thing.) If you don't care enough about grammar and spelling, how clean are your kits?

"Regarding heat, many species love very warm climates during colonisation but it can be a balancing act because so do bacteria!.. If your mycelium is going strong, it can outrun many types of bacteria and you will never know they were even present."
This shit doesn't even make sense. Incomplete sentence and WTF does outrun many types of bacteria mean?

"If you are determined to have a warmer environment for faster colonisation times, we strongly advise against the use of heat mats as they can dry out the bottom of the substrate and stall colonisation. It's a far better idea to store your substrates somewhere with more balanced heat like a warm cupboard above a fridge or near the water boiler.."
I actually agree with this statement. Just saying...

At this point in the instructions I am losing my shit, people.... Don't waste your money.....
STAGE 3: PREPARING THE HUMIDITY TENT
We will now set up the chamber for growing your mushrooms.

For this stage, you will need:
1 x Bag of perlite to provide humidity (supplied)
1 x Humidity tent for fruiting your mushrooms in (supplied)
Summary:
Place your perlite in a strainer and rinse under the tap until soaking. Shake off some of the excess water and pour into the humidity tent.

Detailed:
1. The first step is to rinse the perlite to get rid of all the excess dust. Please wear a face mask or cover your mouth and nose in some way when working with perlite. Get yourself a sieve or strainer (of course with holes smaller than the size of the perlite) and empty the perlite into it. Rinse under a running tap until you can see all of the dust is gone and that the perlite is fully soaked, turn the tap off and shake off some of the excess water but make sure you don't remove too much.

2. Pour the damp perlite into your humidity tent - this will create the humid environment mushrooms love.

that is all I can handle.. I can't read anymore

Sorry but I don’t see how posting the kit’s instructions (which the OP already has) and inserting a few of your random comments (which you actually agree with twice and then say “don’t waste your money”) actually helps the OP.

It’s more than common knowledge that kits are discouraged, but they have explained the situation and how they will be building their own grow the second time around.

If the kit is already purchased, what’s the harm in trying it out?
Can we try to be encouraging to someone interested in cultivation instead of scaring them away from this beautiful hobby?

Thinking about what you post BEFORE you post should be more of a common practice around here (also for you Backbone with your continuous random ass nonsense comments).

We are trying to cultivate mushrooms here, people!

Thanks Sockadin for your help but like Maylink said, I'm aware of the general opinion of grow kits, and I'm only using this first grow as an experience since I have no prior knowledge of growing to draw from.

So back to the facts, harvest after the veil breaks right before the mushrooms begin to spore.

A couple more question...

Is the whole mushroom edible?
And
Once I have harvested my mushrooms, I believe keeping a spore print to inoculate my next grow is the best practice. Do I have to seperate spores from mushroom, or can I place the whole mushroom in the box to begin inoculating?

The whole mushroom is edible, cap and stem. To make a spore print you remove the cap from the stem and place it on a piece of foil in SAB for at least 24hrs. Then I suggest to take those spores to agar, agar to grain and grain to bulk. There's plenty of awesome teks on this site just find one and follow it to the letter. Most of all good luck.

You are correct, my post had nothing to do with the OP questions and was not helpful. At the time I thought it would be funny to see what the new breed of Kit Makers was up to. And this thread was probably not the best place to post that.

Oh and notice the sticky in my sig? It is worth a read, I wrote it 5 years ago...

Also remember that there are moderators already in position for policing content and behavior and you are not one of them.

Very good! So pick just after the veil breaks and its all edible.

I've read conflicting instructions on how many times to air out and water a day. What's the general concensus here, am I right in thinking 3 times a day is appropriate?

I’d say misting 2-3x day depending on if the surface conditions look like they need it.
It seems like there is a tendency to overwater, especially when I was starting out.

Not trying to moderate, just want to provide helpful information instead of discouraging the OP (which I too often see in similar “first time” or “grow kit” posts).

I do agree that some kit makers are providing some questionable information.
Thanks for your input and hard work on your write up!

So I'm looking to keep damp more than soggy?

A question regarding the light process. When flowering, is it ok to leave in a room but out of direct sunlight, as in let the natural day light cycle provide, or should I stick to a pre determined light cycle?

definitely not soggy. Look for a glistening surface.
Is this a PF style TEK? Or a shoebox/mono?

I use a 12/12 cycle with a grow light since I already had one. And it’s not very sunny where I am. So I’m not sure, but I remember reading in other posts that indirect sunlight is fine. Try researching what works with the method you’re using.

Indirect sunlight should be fine, I leave mine by a window and they’ve been fine.
