Fungi perfecti has 24x36 filters for 400 shipped depending on where you are if in the u.s.. If you're somewhere else it may cost a bit more for shipping.
400 shipped may sound like a lot, but the filter is shipped very professionally, quickly, and it's brand new with zero worries about whether or not it will work.

Another place you can look is ebay. They have those Envirco ceiling filters for as low as $200 sometimes and they already have a built in fan. Just make sure you know what you are buying because the replacement filters for them arenβt cheap either.

from what I can tell having done some window shopping for HEPA filters, 36x24 is an unusual size which is probably what is contributing to the difficulty and expense here. Is there some unavoidable reason you don't want 24x24 or 48x24?

Yeah 36x24 is going to weigh a lot. This is why the shipping is so high on these items.

Check the difference between 99.97 and 99.99
You might save a few bucks but the difference in filtration is huge.

I rock a flow hood using a high grade furnace filter and have done hundreds of successful plates, lc's and g2g work. My sterile technique may be part of it but I dunno. π€·

I personally feel like a 24x24 may be a bit to small, yet a 24x48 is just way too big and unnecessary for me. Not only that but the weight of that bad boy will make it impossible to get it up the stairs where i need it..
I do feel like $400 for just the filter for a 24x36 from fp is just way too much, they are a middle man and obviously need to make money on the deal...
i have found 24x24 filters for just $150 shipped, talk about a price difference... i saw bods tek for his flow hood i think ill just keep it simple and purchase the same dayton blower as him (dayton 1tdu2) and go with a 24x24 hepa and save myself a shit load of money

With the hepa youβre payingnfor convenience and speed. Thats literally the onlynpart of the hoods Iβve built I was willing the shell out the money for the one from FP. Most companies who make nice hepas like that are made to order and they want to sell you a couple usually not just one. FP buys those and keeps them in stock, and the blowers that FP sells are just daytons, those you can find waay cheaper, the hepa not as easy.

The mark up on the filters at FP are not that much. I don't have the link handy but I talked to the people they source them from and got some quotes last year. Just buying one from them was almost the same price as FP.

I have this flow hood from FP, and you're right the filters are just more expensive due to the oddball size. I've looked everywhere for them. FP was over 400 with shipping for me. This was the cheapest .99 filter I could find:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/KOCH-H28A3X1-Filter-HEPA99-99-Galv-24x36x5-875/273916770940
Currently $391 shipped, and they may take up to 30 days to get it to you.
I had a thread on it here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26411800
