Top of substrate is matted and won't pin. How do I remedy this?
    #26450891 - 01/24/20 10:09 PM (4 years, 11 months ago)

This is my first time growing and I feel I may have messed up a bit. I have plenty of side pins, but the surface of my substrate is 90% covered in a flat blanket of mycelium without any hyphal knots. There are some small uncovered portions that are pinning, but most of it seems to be suffocated. In addition, when I mist the cake, beads do not appear on the matted surface, the water just soaks in.

The strain is Golden Teacher, and I did not use a casing layer. This tub was closer to my heater, so drying out may be the reason for the issue.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

A scarce amount of pins on the surface, only growing where there is no matted mycelium.

Flip it over, something you get a second go at it. Matting usually occurs
from over misting

I didn't know flipping was an option, I'll do that after harvesting.
Should I harvest everything at once (even little pins) before flipping, or do you think they'll survive the flip? My growth is very uneven now, so I'm thinking of pulling the big boys and waiting for the rest. Pics below:

I'd harvest everything when you're ready and flip it. If you let the side/bottom fruit go too long they'll get mushy.

After harvest, should I keep the tiniest pins for consumption? Do they have any value?

You could also flip it on its side and put a plastic bag over it, just poke a few holes in the bag.

I'll throw in a dissenting vote on harvesting all the pins before a flip. Try keeping some, as long as they won't get smushed in the flip. If they've been chillin for a couple weeks without maturing then there's a good chance they'll change their minds once you flip. This happens a lot, stubborn/side/bottom/random pins all of a sudden get motivated and mature after a flip or other change in sub orientation.

This might sound bonkers and it's entirely untested but you can also try putting down a 1/4" pasteurized casing layer at field capacity on the bottom of your tub before you flip. There's a chance the overlay will stop being fucky and grow into it. If it does you can flip it back over again and fruit it.

I think I'll try your casing layer idea, it sounds interesting. And the little side pins def won't be smushed in the flip, so I'll just leave them after harvest of the big ones. The sub has shrunk so much that I can maneuver it a bit.
