For many recent years I’ve just been doing what I can to keep up with new releases, as hard as that is. But since like June 2019 I’ve pretty much stopped and I’ve instead been focusing on stuff that came out between 1992-2000. Recently rediscovered this track that I loved as a teen, but back then you’d just hear a song on a dj’s mixtape and the chances of ID’ing it were really slim. That’s not how it goes any more, and it’s cool how you can actually name what you enjoy.
Track below is the Rabbit in the Moon remix of Scott Hardkiss’s ‘The Phoenix’, released under his God Within production moniker. It’s got this real natural, almost mystical, vibe. Very trippy kinda psychedelic breakbeat tune that borrows on all kinds of classic RITM themes. Bit of a deep cut type, but still went off real well in the party. RITM & Hardkiss were all great in their own rights, R.I.P. Scott tho.

Damn, sorry to hear Armin was wack. Of all the genres of dance music, there’s a solid argument for the idea that trance music was hit the hardest by the commercialization of it all. It was susceptible just because of style and popularity, and when big money came to trance, everyone just started doing what sold. Bummer.
Lately I’ve been really digging around in the catalogs of Platipus Records and Hardkiss, so been listening to hella old music.
I found this song the other night and couldn’t believe it. There was a local dj in my area who made a great tape that started off with this track, and I loved it back in the 90s. At over 12 minutes it’s pretty long, but the way it goes in and out of phases while keeping coherency, I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to think of it like the Bohemian Rhapsody of 90s hard trance. Truly epic tune. Really nice long intro that perfectly creates an atmospheric foundation for the whole huge track.
Union Jack- Two Full Moons and a Trout (Caspar Pound remix)
I also found this Scott Hardkiss song that was on an old Huda Hudia mixtape I had a long time ago. I always thought of it as the centerpiece of the tape. This song is similar to the Hardkiss track I posted above, in that it has this mystical/spiritual vibe. Really amazing thoughtful breakbeats from the earlier days.

Damn, good point. Commercialization can suck big time. The second genre hit the hardest was Dubstep. But I like commercial/mainstream Dubstep so it worked out for me at least

Yeah, it was definitely crazy watching dubstep blow up like it did. While I was seeing it though, it felt like natural progression because the internet was closely tied into the meteoric rise of dubstep. Trance was around before the internet, so it had a long time to simmer in the underground before it got popular, and it’s cool that it had that time. I can’t imagine that there are no new trance releases that are good, but I don’t even bother looking for them because there’s still so much high grade old stuff to sort through. No real point to this paragraph, I’m just kinda thinking out loud.
Another interesting commercialization scene is synthwave. I started listening to it relatively late, in 2013, but it’s changed so much by now. I think a lot of it is because there’s really only so much to do with that sound aesthetic that producers have been forced to branch out real far to make new sounds, and now the new sounds don’t much resemble the older stuff. But like every major pop star has a song or two that borrows elements from synthwave, and pop art graphics have really taken to the “retro” outrun look, so it’s obviously still popular with someone. Synthwave is weird though, it behaves more like rock music in some ways, even though it’s clearly dance music. Not many people DJ it, and the live shows are always much more like concerts than they are like raves. The albums feel more like AOR than conventional dance music LPs. It’s a weird music scene, and tbh I’m not so crazy about a lot of stuff that’s come out lately. Example of newer synth wave below.

Yeah, Ive kinda heard about Synthwave. Its sorta rare to find in my experience. And its sorta of more Electronica than Electronic music. Sorta borders the line a bit, like Reggae Dub, it has both rock and electronic influences.
One of my favorite Bassnectar Remixes in semi-commercial style. I Love it:

Hey, I found this today and thought some of you might be interested in it. It’s this big branching “family tree” type thing that breaks down the origins and familial associations of lots of genres and microgenres of electronic music. If you zoom in on it, you’ll see that the lines are broken into segments; each segment represents a linear year, and you can click on them to hear an example of a specific type of music in a specific year. For instance, you can hear a selection of acid house from 1995, or a tune of electronic body music from 1988. Dozens of niche genres, all neatly arranged. Even though I’ve been listening to this music for decades, there’s still so much to hear.

And here’s an old drum n bass tune that I haven’t heard in ages that randomly popped into my head today. It’s got a nice long intro, worth a full listen.

Nice! I remember Ishkur! He changed it a ton in this recent edit.
I remember the old version was a lot of fun. It had a "90's" look to it and had 6 Major categories, House, Techno, Breakbeat, Trance, Dub and Downtempo.
I remember discovering "Funky House" on there under "House" and being like "Thatz my genre". Also found Shpongle under "Trance-Downtempo PsyTrance" which i find to be a great classification of Shpongle.
Wish i had screenshots of the old Ishkur Electronic Music Guide. So classic.

How do you work this thing? I kinda like the older look better.
I remember the guy's commentary was funny, he seemed pretty cynical and snobbish about a LOT of stuff.

Hey! Thats the one!
I guess i missed a couple major genres like Hardcore and Jungle. Whoops!
The commentary was the best. My favorite ones were the commentary for "Glitch", various genres of "Trance" and "Intelligent Dance Music". So many Lolz categories.
