Growing active wood lovers in Florida
    #26450329 - 01/24/20 04:40 PM (4 years, 5 days ago)

Hey all I was interested in starting an outdoor bed of active wood lovers in Florida and was wondering if there was any possibility of doing so. I live at the bottom of plant hardiness zone 8 and the top of zone nine. Can anyone shed some light on what possible strains, if any, could survive in these zones?

The winters are mild and it rarely drops below freezing but the humidity always extremely high. I was also wondering when would be the best time of year to get started.

Just need a place to get started researching and to know if it is even a possibility. Also open to other interesting active species more suited to outdoor cultivation. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

most of the woodlovers require specific conditions to fruit it likely never gets cold enough where you live to get most of them to fruit if not all of them.

psilocybe subaeruginosa is prolly your best bet as far as woodlovers go

Why not try tampanensis?

It's (obviously) from Florida.

Make the bed deep to help some of the mycelium survive the freeze. Go for it let's see what happens.

Yeah that's what I was guessing. I always just thought it would be so cool to have a well established bed that all I would need to do is add more wood and check it during the right season. I obviously understand that getting it to that point would take a few seasons but sounds cool.

Nice idea. I could start on RGS, harvest the stones, then use the spawn for an outdoor bed.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Well I have been doing my research and I found three possible candidates, P. subaeruginosa, P. subaeruginascens, and P. ovoideocystidiata. Any thoughts on any of these? Ovoids have been found in Georgia which is just north of me and the weather in southern Australia where subaeruginosa grow is extremely similar to my climate zone.
