Let entire casing layer colonize?
    #2644374 - 05/06/04 05:17 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

1. When I see pics of people that are moving to fruiting, I see that the very very top of the casing layer looks like 50/50 white and casing color. I thought the top had to be completly white? Is that even possible?

2. Should I put more casing on the areas that have already come thru white? (Patching)

3. Also is it necessary to cold shock a casing?

~thanks~

1) that means the casing is close to overlaying ( i think), and yes it is possible to let it colonize the entire surface but i'm pretty sure you dont want it to do that
2)if they are the first spots of myc to poke through the caseing layer then patching with extra caseing material is a good idea but dont patch every bit that pops up just patch till you have a nice even amount of myc showing in the caseing surface
3)i don't really think it is neccisary to coldshock any of the Cubensis strains.
4)wait for other answers
hehe :wexican:
good luck

I've only grown once, but I had quite a harvest (1 dry QP from 8 cased PF jars, a few flushes), and this is what I learned:

Never patch:

Patching ruined four of my casings (I would have had 12). It's just another vector for contamination, and I think it's better to put a casing in to fruit earlier than patching. Less risk of contams that way. Also, the casings that were 50-50 fruited far better than the ones that were closer to 100, since the latter had overlay. Even after forking them up a bit, they didn't fruit as well.

But remember: this is just one newbie telling you what worked for him ONCE. Take it or leave it, like you would the bagel dogs at a smorgasborg.
