Azurescens greenhouse experiment, Startup Question, as much as possible per spore syringe?
    #26449710 - 01/24/20 10:21 AM (4 years, 5 days ago)

Hi, I'm hoping to dip into the deep well of your collective wisdom on this crazy idea I have.

The concept is as such: Cold climate, A simple polytunnel greenhouse with 3 beds, about 10m2 total, 40cm deep semi-insulated filled with pure birch chips (not sawdust) are to be spawned with P. Azurescens. Potentially heating cables may be dug into the beds.

I live in a relatively cold climate, freezing temps is from oct-april potentially (but rarely)  dipping to -30C in dec-feb, certainly colder than native climates, birch is the only economically realistic form of semi-hard wood available, however smaller amounts of hardwood pellets (for grilling) can be acquired at a high price. Some form of casing will probably be a good idea also (bark mulch?).

A spore syringe or two will be the initial source of mycelium.

So what are your guys ideas on how to successfully go from spore syringe to fully colonized and fruiting beds?

Looking here to get as much out of one syringe as possible and considering Syringe -> Liquid Culture -> more liquid culture -> grain/hardwood pellets -> more grain/hardwood pellets -> Birch chip beds.

Please feel free to chime in and roast, toast, simmer and cook any ideas presented!

With something that size and that much work you’re gonna need agar or brf plates to make sure everything’s clean.

Other than that sounds like a reasonable plan. Lc def expands quickly.

Noc some grains and spawn the grains to chips.
Not sure why you want to do it in a greenhouse, if you plan on mass producing them just call your local landscaping company, get a truckload of mulch or chips. Why fight Nature when you can use it to your advantage

Well the reason for the greenhouse is several, the idea is that the greenhouse can potentially mimic the growing conditions of the native Oregon coast, I'm infact unsure if they will even survive well in nature here if future winters are particularly harsh and long, of course the last few have been very mild but still, all in all the greenhouse gives the possibility to controll growing conditions somewhat..

The other reason is privacy, having them in the greenhouse lets me mess around with them and the whole process without looking the least suspicious, if I were to simply dump a bunch of chips and mulch on my yard in the least it would potentially leave my neighbours scratching their heads as to why I would want to create a mess like that, that being said I do plan on trying it out at some point once I get the greenhouse established, maybe making some neat flower beds that are bottomed with some mulch and oh look at that some mushies came up, how cute!

Thing is once I get an idea I tend to exaggerate, like why not... I don't want to have just a couple cute flowerbeds with a few popping up here and there I want freaking buckets of the stuff. :crazy2:

Do your landscaping real nice, the way rich people do. Put them mulch beds on thick like 8-12 inches deep. No need to worry bout th winters they are used to harsh freezing. IMO having a greenhouse is much more suspicious
