Hey, as a local of the far south coast, I haven't ever really had the opportunity to hunt for cubensis (and cyans? its also the right time, yea?)... only subs, and I was wondering where people were having luck (I know, no locations), more in terms of how far south they occur? I'm very much scrabbling in the dark here, absolutely zero experience with cubes haha thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to the shroomery, you have a majority of Psilocybe cubensis and I see one Panaeolus (Copelandia) cyanescens.

Just curious how far north you are in NSW.
I’m in Sydney and looking to head out for my first hunt. Have no idea where to start looking or whether to go north or south of the Sutherland area.
Help!

Look anywhere cows and horses are grazing and you should find Psychoactive Psilocybe cubensis and Panaeolus cyanescens

Thanks for that.
I thought it was only cow dung. Didn’t realise horses were a source too.
Does anyone from Sydney know if Deer dung is source. As my local national park has a lot of wild deer in it.
With all this rain i reckon it’ll be nice for a bush walk.

I'll be checking the Hunter Valley and Newcastle areas hopefully this weekend but certainly within the next week.
I know we can't be specific but if any locals from here have seen any then just a simple point in the general direction would be appreciated. Such as suburbs etc.
The Hunter vineyard area is so barren that even after rain I still don't think there's much hope of cubes growing.

I suggest looking in your area before traveling long distances, you can check sources like mushroom observer and inaturalist.org to see if they have already been found in your area.

Appears you are too far south to find anything at the present moment, southernmost reported find of Panaeolus cyanescens is in Bellingen, and for Psilocybe cubensis you apparently need to go all the way up to Queensland. Or you could wait a few months for Psilocybe subaeruginosa to start growing in your area.

I forget that NSW encompasses a huge area, but I enjoy the hunt so I would still go look. You never know what is around you until you take the time to see.
It really surprises me sometimes that certain species do not grow in the wild in certain places. Take Psilocybe cubensis and Southern California for instance, California has excellent weather that would have cubensis thriving on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. but they don't exist there in the wild and I've often wondered if it was the desert, Rocky mountains or a combination of the two that has kept them from reaching California. The same can be applied to several different places around the world, you would think they would grow in any tropical or subtropical region.

I would probably check google for cattle farms along the coast somewhere in between Sydney and Brisbane.

I think the causes for this are quite complex, but if you think that, apart from similar average temperatures, certain weather phenomena are prevalent in the south east that you don't have much of in California. Floods, for instance. So there is a difference in climate that probably is a good reason for the difference in fungal activity.
The mushrooms, of course, "know" all about this. Or maybe they just realized there was already so much LSD on the west coast that they had better business staying by the Gulf Coast. Like Domino's tried to start here in Norway but it doesn't work for them since the market for bad pizza is already saturated.

Both can be found much farther south, Cubensis at least have been found all over NSW provided right conditions, I've even heard unconfirmed reports from Northern Victoria

Found some.
But I'm pretty sure they're Panaeolus antillarum. I was super excited as I noticed them on way home from work but once I got home I checked it with every possible pan cyan thread and these guys don't bruise blue.
Didn't want to just flood the boards with another Id request when simple research can do the same results.

Though it's a good sign that shrooms are around. Just got to keep looking.

And this is this morning. One seems bruised and isn't as conical as the other two but I'm still not sure it's pan cyan.

Hey shroomers,
Anyone had any luck with cubensis in the vicinity of Newcastle NSW. Did some serious km’s west of lake Mac within a 100km radius with no luck. Saw plenty of mushrooms, but no cubensis. First season hunting cubes and have a lot to learn. Hopefully some more rain coming soon and will hit up a different location. Found P.subs for days during winter in heaps of locations in and around Newie, but cubes are proving more difficult for me. The hunt continues.
Happy Hunting

Hey shags. Did you check out Tarro, beresfield or hexham. Plenty on low lying paddocks that seem a lot more green now.
BTW I hit you up last year in a pm but you never got back to me..
