trays/tubs sharing the same environment ...
    #26448989 - 01/23/20 08:56 PM (4 years, 24 days ago)

I"m ready to take a few small trays and push them along to the fruiting stage - spent quite some time designing a fruiting chamber that is probably a bit unconventional - essentially it is a plywood box coated on the inside with resin to make it waterproof. I've added some automatic hatches/fans which open and give FAE through hepa filters set on a timer. an altered Vicks humidifier pumps fog in, Also has some computer fans that internally circulate air... probably completely overkill  but was a fun project to work on + hopefully it may will save some time down the road fanning and misting etc... trying to give some context to this question...

Because my set up it similar to a few of the greenhouse style ones I have seen here where there is several trays/tubs without a lid and they all share the same environment. It occurred to me that the down side is that they may could all potentially share the same contams as well, or is this not something I should worry about? also I am growing different strains to try and test and potentially isolate good performers - is it OK they are all in the same big box since the spores may co-mingle etc. ?

thanks!

about the size of a few large-ish mono tub containers, so the trays will  be in pretty close proximity

hmm don't get it, is that a suspicious face?

Just trying to figure out if it's OK common to have several trays in one environment. It seemed easier to control the humidity + air ect. but will consider keeping them separate if contams or (crossbreeding?) is going to be more likely.

Well.. I understand the want/need to make things more difficult when starting out because you think it can’t possibly be as easy as everyone says and how great would it be if I could automate a cabinet and I wouldn’t have to do anything but throw the tubs in there and flip a switch and come back 2 weeks later to lbs of perfectly flushing tubs.

I’m gonna save your a whole lot of headache and heartache and just give you these links

Do one or both of those tub set ups and you’ll be more than happy.  If it were a bigger cabinet or a Martha tent, it might be more likely to produce flushes that make it worth it.  Mono tubs with the right hole configuration produce their own environment that’s prime for top production.  Automation in such a small environment is going to be waaay overkill.. you run a humidifier for more than a few minutes (probably even less) and it’s going to drench your tubs and You can have power failures etc and you’re tubs are going to suffocate.

All that being said.  Yes, you can have cross contamination from tub to tub.. especially if the tubs are sharing the same space with the lids off and you have things like blowers and fans blowing spore loads around.

I have a feeling you’re going to give it a whirl anyway (I’ve tried plenty of automated stuff—Martha’s etc so I’m coming from experience) and what I would do is have a couple tubs where you do the tried and tested way in the links I gave you so you know you’ll more than likely end up with some mushy goodness and then have a 2nd set of tubs where you try this box out but I wouldn’t put all your eggs in that basket

Faht

Awesome advice Fahster, thanks!!

I suppose a bit of the appeal to grow is designing some contraptions - but yeah, don't want to re-invent the wheel or miss the simple + elegant solutions  I do have a few isolated quart jars with a simple casing and plastic on the top that should grow out just in case some crazy contams take over the box - I'll let you know how it goes.
