    #26447137 - 01/22/20 08:17 PM (4 years, 6 days ago)

Hi

I recently took an interest in identifying mushrooms on my hikes and trail runs here in the Bay Area. I was wondering if anyone can help me identify these mushrooms.

habitat: very decomposed dirt and wood

gills: purple, brown tan

cap: tan, brownish white

spore: have not completed yet

Bruising; no color change was observed

Location: Bay Area peninsula Santa cruz mountains

Some kind of Agaricus. Smell might help people to ID.

Probably agaricus californicus. Or (if you're lucky) a. campestris. I think californicus is more likely among redwood litter. If you can lay hands on KOH solution (potassium hydroxide), that will help you distinguish them.

Tiling my kitchen the other day, I found out that grout haze remover has potassium hydroxide as its main component. Diluted, it should work for mushroom identification. I’ve also heard sodium chloride works, which is the main component in Drano gel. Never tried it though.

Sodium chloride is plain table salt. You probably mean sodium hydroxide which will likely work the same as KOH for mushroom identification.

When identifying Agaricus, bruising and smell are important characteristics.

Yeah, sodium hydroxide. Thanks for catching and correcting.

Looks kind of similar to A. hondensis, imo. Try to cut a specimen lengthwise in half and smell the stem base.
