Why is agar the only way to grow mushrooms?

Its not... People have used syringes to grow mushrooms for a half a century. If you can deal with complete failures now and then mixed in with success then direct inoculation with spores is for you

I've done hundreds of jars with MS and can remember losing about 3-4.

Yea most people think their shit that's fucked isn't. Amazingly common occurrence. You'd lose more than 3-4 jars doing agar work after hundreds of jars. People don't even realize they're full of shit lol

See that's what I thought, but the peeps on shroomery Facebook say agar is the only way to go and that you can't go to grain or LC from multispores

I think the most common way of using multispore successfully without agar is pf tek.. which people do recommend sometimes but agar saves potential time wasted. I recommend agar but see nothing wrong with pf tek either. Never tried it but I can't knock it.. it's been around for a long time and it does work so agar isn't the ONLY way. But it is overall a lot more efficient

Agar is the best way to grow not the only way to grow.
If u can make clean spore prints, and make clean syringes, then u can grow without agar. Or if u want the easy expensive way, just buy new spore syringes every grow.

Agar isn’t the only way to grow, but it’s cheap, easy and arguably the best way to do it. Why someone wouldn’t do it is beyond me.

Just wondering, do you mean bacterial jars that most noobs can’t identify, or something worse?
It’s funny, I just did a grain run where the myc is so beautiful, white, dense, and just healthy looking, that I’m 99% sure that EVERY other jar I’ve ever grown was bacterial. I’m talking hundreds years ago, plus about 4 dozen in the past 3 months. It’s just so nice and fast and I see 0 moisture inside the jars. Ya think this could be possible?

Ok cool. I get that settles. Agar isn't the way to grow mushrooms. Jot sure how Facebook is gonna react to this mindblowing information. I might even get banned for saying it

My first grow was with a spore syringe in 5 jars. The first jar colonized relatively quickly and each subsequent jar took longer until the last that didn't look like it would ever take off. The slowest jars never fruited well and contammed early. I learned it's a race against contamination. When you put spore to petri or liquid culture, you produce your mycelium in a safer environment and it cuts a week out of your jars/grain colonization time. Your grow time is also more consistent. In addition, there are methods to isolate faster mycelium growth and exponentially expand your supply with a LC.
A advanced progression path: spore > petri (I also do a LC as a safety backup) > petri isolations > grow > clone the best mushy > petri isolations > LC (Then good to test your LC on petri for contam)
Now you have a limitless source of mycelium that is fast growing with great genetics.
