Anyone here ever do any volunteer work? 2

I've been wanting for a while to volunteer on something that's a good cause. For the longest now weekends have been my time to get blitzed and really just drown myself in alcohol, but since the beginning of last year I've been working towards a significantly more sober lifestyle. So on some of these drink-free weekends I would really like to do something good. Something productive.
Have any of you volunteered in the past? And if so, what was it? Are there any good volunteer ideas you might have to share?

I do a lot of GIS(basically filling in missing data for maps in disaster prone areas to help first responders) volunteering right now, it's all home based though, and mostly to pad my resume tbh.
One thing I want to look into doing myself is dog walking for rescues and animal shelters. Gets you outside, gets the pups outside, might help you meet some new people. Another one you could look into is registering people to vote - I've done that before for the Sanders campaign and probably will again soon. You don't get political, you just inform curious people who ask you, and register everyone and anyone you can regardless of political affiliations. There's also organizations out there that are bi-partisan and don't tie themselves to a specific campaign. That's a really great way to meet like minded people, imo.

I help my immediate community. Not by picking up litter on the highway or hanging at nursing homes. I give elderly people, disabled people, and other people free electrical work and heavily discounted work. I don't advertise it though, I wait until they hire me and then if I access that they are in need then I will give the discount after the work is done and surprise them.
I help neighbors, family, and friends in more significant ways. In a couple years when my business is more stable I will donate more.

I’ve volunteered a couple places. One was this place where you’d go and sort and load toiletries/necessities to be taken to churches that would give them to the homeless. I’ve washed dishes for community centers before and picked up trash in parks, but that was because I had to do community service for court.
Volunteering opportunities are very specific to your location. If you’re in a big city you shouldn’t have a problem finding an organization that can help you find a volunteering opportunity that appeals to you.
My girlfriend loves kids but doesn’t want any of her own so she volunteers for this “Lead to Read” program where she goes to an elementary school every week to read one-on-one with a first grader. She likes it because she can do it on her lunch break, and she has the same kid for a whole year and so far she’s been lucky and gotten a really good kid for the last 3 years she’s been doing it. She also volunteers for hospice which just means she goes and sits with people that are dying so that their family members can get out of the house and run errands or go to church or whatever. No diaper changing or anything, they’re not allowed to do anything like that. Basically just sits and talks with them or reads a book while they sleep.
Volunteering is a good way to meet nice people. Average American (not sure if you’re American) doesn’t give a shit about anyone but themselves and close friends/family. Generally speaking, the type of people you find volunteering care a little more about their community. This is a good sign they aren’t selfish and are therefore more likely to be a worthwhile friend or acquaintance, at least more likely than if you picked a random person off the street or at a bar.
If you’re not in a big city, you can find opportunities to help veterans in smaller cities. (I’m sure there’s plenty of other stuff you could do but you’d have to find out what that is on your own) check out DAV at DAV.org and you can find something I’m sure. Could be anything from building a ramp for someone’s house to handing out flyers or collecting donations at the grocery store.

Adopt a road, park, beach, or other public area and keep it clean of trash for a certain amount of time and they give you a sign. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adopt-a-Highway See if your area has any of these kinds of programs.
Start a local FB group that meets up to pick up trash once a month.
I like the idea of walking animals from shelters.

I do this

a couple of times a week.
Out of interest I might look into getting a set of scales so iI can (NPI) get an idea of how much weight the local slobbish cunts are littering a year.

2 easy ones for you.
Elder people in nursing homes are really lonely these days. Lot of people with no one in theyr life. I went to meet couple guys during christmas. Older men. Took some artisan chocolate made in belgium and hugs too with me. Maybe half an hour chatting with them. We talked about shamanism, philosophy and sadism for example. Older people can be and usually are filled with knowledge and they are not senile idiots like some people try to make it look.
this costed me 6 eurosand took maybe 1.5 hour of my time completly. For them i bet it was priceless.
Other easy one. Harm reduction through internet. Hey you are member of one of biggest portals of tis area in net. Make it advantage. All so lots of harm reduction groups in facebook for example.

I haven't done volunteer work in a long-time, but I used to do canvasing around neighbourhoods for the BC Cancer Society and stuff like that. Not sure how common that is anymore though, seems like it's a pretty easy way to fraud people. As some have suggested mental health facilities are a great idea, animal shelters as well.

several years of volunteer time at the humane society, roughly 20 hours a week walking dogs was a bit of it cleaning kennels and litter boxes and refilling food and water dishes and running blankets through the laundry was the bulk of it
my volunteer time was in a kill shelter, so it would suck to get to know some of the older animals then have to see them head off to the vet to be euthanized to make way for the next batch of kittens/puppies but aside from that part being hard, it was a really rewarding experience
also did volunteer work as a moderator for an online gaming company deleting pornography, policing trolls, and the like to keep things PG rated drove me more or less insane would not suggest

homeless shelter or mission work is kind of hit or miss to suggest it can be really rewarding to meet with people and help them get their lives back together but interacting with people in such a negative situation can occasionally result in them lashing out so need to thicken up skin a bit to fight off bitterness coming from people you're trying to help

This is exactly what I would really, really struggle with. It honestly sounds like torture, and I have so much respect for people that are working and volunteering at those places. Just dropping off a really sick cat I found in the middle of the road was an emotional toll on me. It was missing it's lower jaw and they told me it would be euthanized, I didn't have the resources to help it and neither did they..but man, it hurt to drop that poor kitty off, and I still think about her.
I've got to stick with no-kill places.

I volunteer at an environmental center/nursery that cultivates trees from seed and replants private land adjacent to existing rainforest. A lot of land was cleared many years ago in this area and many landowners want the rainforest to return rather than having just a paddock.

Words of wisdom for sure T. When I just turned 18 I volnt'd at a hospital Fair benefit kind of thing. I shucked clams for the local tavern I patronized ( got drunk at ). That pulled me out of my shell, -exposing me to all kinds of different people and their situations. It wa s like two years of highschool in a single afternoon.

remember getting to the shelter one morning as the worker was opening up for the day **this originally had a real graphic description but the important part is some drunk guy tried to drop off a cat when the shelter was closed and instead killed it and left the corpse for the shelter**
it is warming to know that you did all you could for that kitty
but yeah, rather than really severe conditions it was typically saying goodbye to roughly 7-10 year old cats that had been there a year or two and were getting classed as "unadoptable" and sent for euthanization because the kennel space was needed for the year's batch of kittens having grown up
lots of really good cats gone, and just can't be the crazy cat lady and take them all in for a sort of palliative care

appreciate the advice, but it is not so much being unable to be outgoing and more reflective of how sometimes people can say abrasive things that, well, hurt when unprepared like if someone lashes out and calls you full of yourself and egotistical being dressed too nice then find out that they got rejected for a business-type job that day
honestly, in terms of working up a thick skin the thing that did the most for me was doing phone survey work people would tell me to die, kill myself, fuck off, stop being a nosey dick, etc. etc. lotsa "fun" -- not volunteer work tho, that was a paid position

I hear you loud and clear amiga. People can be such A-holes that it makes one wonder how we as a people made it THIS far. But there is hope. Why? Because people like you have learned (evolved?) enough to acquire the skill of self inquiry/ introspection. Things in our present lifetimes are nuts for sure, but there are also many who still hear the sounds of their soul.

You just keep being you Tantrika. Only one opinion about you is truly important, your own.
Other people can say all sorts of things about you but if those opinions don't match your own truth just reject them. Fuck em.
Of course keeping a solid discourse with yourself is important with this approach. Sometimes people say things to me and I reject them, but later on I'm like "Well yeah, they've got as point there". It's good for me to be brutally honest with myself about myself. Saves a lot of confusion.

I went to a food shelter one morning and worked for 4 hours or so. They thought I was there for community service which was kinda funny. It was all right, kind of cool to help people eat food, and Id like to go again, but really I wish I could somehow get large quantities of food to areas where people have little to no access. Countries where kids are literally starving. I wish I knew a good way to do that outside of just donating money.
I recently donated to The Life You Can Save, which is a network based on getting basic nutrients to people without access. Iodine for kids who dont have any, as it is a basic necessity for neural growth, and stuff like that... Its a super cool concept, I just wish I had a more efficient way make a difference in the starving outside of giving money every now and then. I think maybe when my daughter is a bit older and we have (hopefully) more financial freedom I will have more time and resources to devote to doing something like that.
Also been trying to write a self-help book that I am just going to release for free to the interweb. I work at a crisis home for 18-26 year olds and know there is a big population at that range who dont know what the fuck to do with themselves, so its more of a book written by an old guy yelling at them to get their asses in gear... heh.

Ive done community service when i was on probation for growing weed (before it was legal).
I "volunteered" at a local church doing things like packing boxes and cleaning up trash on the property. Really nice people! They didnt push any sort of religious stuff on me and gave me free food. Really kind people. Overall a pleasant experience.
Another thing u can volunteer at is Soup Kitchens, which are part of churches as well. You'll meet a lot of interesting homeless people there, as well as poor families.

I used to do a lot of volunteer work back when my job was very active in the community. One of my favorite ones was where we did this thing where we drove to peoples' places of business and, "arrested" them, brought them to a pub, and their friends and family had to come donate to, "bail them out." It was such a cool idea and I had a lot of fun.
I remember showing up to the pub not knowing what I'd be doing when this guy in a suit said, "Okay let's do this, follow me." So I followed him outside to a limo. He was a freakin limo driver. I rode in the limo to this guy's office and his coworkers all got their cameras out and were having a great time watching him get arrested. We both played it up too, I was like, "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you at _____ Bar and Grille in ______". It was a lot of fun and we raised a lot of money.
Another one we cleaned up a run down school in East Philly. Not the greatest of neighborhoods. We were cleaning up needles and mini liquor bottles from an elementary school recess yard. Pretty depressing. We also did some painting as well, and the kids were happy to have us there.

I was "volunteered" by the state to do unpaid community service. I picked up trash with one of those pinchers.
It was actually very satisfying work and I really felt like I did some actual good for the community. Its very meditative for some reason. I have been contemplating getting my own kit and cleaning around here where I live.
You could start something like that too. Its very low-level and could greatly improve the neighbourhood. Perhaps even inspire other people to do the same
EDIT: sorry, been suggested a couple times already

Nursing homes and the VA's are probably always needing someone to do something.

I used to volunteer at plowshares. Basically it’s feeding the poor and hungry so you cook and clean the kitchen. They get a lot of people doing community service there, but there’s also a mix of people who just want to help a little in their community. If you’ve ever worked in a commercial kitchen it’s not much different except the meal are simple as it’s mostly donated foods. I usually cleaned more than cooked but they need all types of help. It made me feel positive I was having a small contribution to the community.

I regularly volunteer at the meditation community I frequent. Our weekly meetings have 40-60 attendees and I help set up chairs, be a greeter, put out flower arrangements, take out trash, etc. Once a month we have family day and I organize outdoor games for the kids, and sometimes help with arts and crafts. 2 weeks ago we met and I showed the kids how to make cootie catchers, which was a lot of fun.

Once again I greatly appreciate all the feedback on this. Lots of great suggestions.
So I was browsing today and while I was looking more for something that would be helping people in need -- one of the opportunities that came up in the area was for a big cat sanctuary.
I'm really fascinated by big cats so to be able to help at a sanctuary and be around them is enticing for sure. And I guess there's no rule where I couldn't volunteer at two different places!

Don't get me wrong -- I still partake. Just trying to get it down to a fraction of what it used to be.
