Is it really “just funny”? I feel bad for that dad. I doubt he woke up that morning wanting to assault a child, and I really don’t think he intended to get arrested. I’m not saying that what he did was right, but I can say that I get it. Slams like that are disallowed in wrestling because they can kill or paralyze a person. That dad saw someone try to maim his boy and he reacted on pure instinct. Again, he shouldn’t have done it, but if I was him, it would’ve taken everything in me to not do the same. I just feel bad for that guy.

Yes. It's funny. And if you can't control yourself don't go to the match. The kid didn't even lose a step he was ready to go and his dumb ass dad fucked it up. Hope that wasn't an important match.

I suspect there's probably a direct correlation between how empathetic one is and how funny one finds that video.
Personally I find absolutely nothing funny about it. I just see a bunch of sadness in the making.

Are you sure about that? I see slams like that fairly often.... over time. You’re sure it’s against the rules?

Slams like that are allowed in “professional wrestling”, like WWE or whatever. That’s why Undertaker was able to throw Mankind off the top of the cage through the announcers table at Hell in a Cell in 1998. But you cannot do slams like that where a participant lands on his head/neck at a high school match. I believe that the ref in the video blows his whistle to stop the match after it happens, presumably to remind the slammer and to dock him points or whatever the punishment is.

I think the disconnect arises out of people treating pro wrestling as if it's real. But these are carefully choreographed moves that both performers work together on. Pull it on someone "IRL" out of the blue and you can straight up kill or paralyze them.

I don’t mean WWF, I want to say I could dig up a good number of clips where people do that. Whether or not they would be high school I don’t know but this isn’t the first time I’m seeing that take down.

Yeah, I wrestled back in the day and takedowns like that were kind of considered along the same lines as a crushing sack on a quarterback... High fives on one side and condemnation on the other. Wrestling is a physically exhausting sport with reversals usually drawing the most applause and adrenaline rushes usually don't do much more than wear you out quicker in a long match.
That said, I'm not sure what I'd have done had it been done to one of my boys.....that could have easily paralyzed him.

If it's allowed then people will train to land it safely when it's done on them. Most of the time anyway, if not then it's the risk you signed up for. If you ambush somebody with it when they're not expecting it because the rules forbid it, you could kill them. And if it's outside the rules then it's not the risk they signed up for.

What about adults, like at the olympics? Maybe I watch too much UFC or something but I thought that toss was fair game.

In actuality "slamming" is an illegal move and is usually called when one or the other completely lifts the other off the mat and throws them down. Pretty sure there are penalty points...1 or 2 taken away, can't remember exactly.

From a strategic standpoint is there ever a time when a wrestler would go ahead with the illegal move, get a couple points docked and carry on? You know what I’m saying? How frequently are people slamming even though it’s technically illegal?

No, they won't do it because competitive matches often come down to a mere 1 or 2 points. Additionally, You could piss off an evenly matched opponent to the extent that they could dig a little deeper to win.
