buna-shimeje PICS
    #2644508 - 05/06/04 09:09 AM (14 years, 23 days ago)

There appears to be some confusion as to the identity of this mushroom...

The following are pics of buna-shimeje as it is known and eaten by the Japanese. I will be attempting to clone this onto agar tonight and would appreciate any info you might have (Latin name??).

The gills are white, it grows in large clusters by all appearances. The surface is light brown and appears slightly scaly...

I think it's Hypsizygus tessulatus.

You are so lucky finding those (from a grocery?)..

That company also sells Enoki and Nameko mushrooms..
http://www.nn.zennoh.or.jp/tokusan/kinoko.htm

Could you get those also?
We could make a trade or something then..

It is just a pic from that company's webpage...

I don't understand Japanese at all, but I can guess
that it says "ki-no-ko" (mushroom - tree's child).

"take" (bamboo?) also means mushroom, I understand ..
enoki-take, shii-take, matsu-take, mai-take and so on...

I cloned Shimeji (from a hyperstore) recently and it is doing very well on an agar plate. The shrooms looked similar but not the same (hats were rather grayish) like yours.
I'm also interested in some cultivation advice!
They are wood decomposers, i assume. What do you think, which substrate they like best: Beech chips, coco coir, softwood sawdust or a mixture? Is addition of lime a good idea, and is the light cycle important? Which temperature is required for the different stages of developement?

Too many questions, so here comes a !

Thank you

That was exactly what I was looking for!
Thank you for the link.
they seem to be touchy:
The first two generations of spawn can be grain. The third generation can be sawdust or grain.
