Gradually you will develop the ability to master your mind in all circumstances; and by following in the footsteps of the accomplished masters of the past, you will gain enlightenment in a single lifetime."

Transformative spirituality, authentic spirituality, is revolutionary. It does not legitimate the world, it breaks the world; it does not console the world, it shatters it. And it does not render the self content. it renders it undone.

“You ask how we can know the infinite? I answer, not by reason…You can only apprehend the infinite by entering into a state in which you are finite self no longer. “There are two ways to illumine anger. One way is to enlarge your heart. If you have been wronged, use your power of identification. Feel that it is you yourself, or an extended part of your own consciousness, that has done the wrong thing. The sooner you can rid yourself of the idea that somebody else has done something to you, the better off you will be.
The second way is to think of perfecting yourself. When you stop thinking of perfecting others and only care for your own aspiration, you will be liberated from anger. Instead of looking around to see who is obstructing you or standing in your way, just pay all attention to your own self-discovery. When you have discovered your true self, you will see that there is nobody imperfect on earth. Everybody is perfect in you.” - Sri Chinmoy

"The habit of giving breaks down gradually the walls of separation between God and man, and leads the devotee to offer to the Lord the ultimate gift: the surrender of his soul. When he makes a gift of his soul to God through love, without expectation of any return of divine favour, he has passed life’s highest test." - Paramahansa Yogananda

For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.-romans But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.-james

It seems like service is an action that can be inward as well as outward. I think that's what you were getting at in that post? That no matter what we do, it can all be considered service when done with the right intention. In Buddhism the whole idea of Bodhicitta is to hold the intention to attain Realization for the benefit of others. There is no outward service there, but it means that even inward action such as meditation can still ultimately be service, because it is done not for the ego, but for the Other. Walking down the street can be service, if the right intention can be held
“Wherever you go, go with inspiration and aspiration. Whatever you do, do with love and concern. Whomever you see, see with purity's beauty And responsibility's glory.” - Sri Chinmoy

Precisely, Its nice to hear the perspective of buddha. there will be no truly external-workings without the inner as first.
Truly the ego is a loud bitch. I was Walking down the street in the past, then gave a food to a beggar whom I came across with.
The EGO said: thats good your a good man!! Compared to the bypassers.
Then begar: eats his food silently with joy. Releived after fasting.
Seing the joy and a relieved fellow.
The Other-self realizing: Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.-Matthew For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent-Corinthians
As a lowly servant of the path, thats the least thing I can give To thy fellow while Im in a moderate apparel. Im still no one.Quote:
Let love be genuine.-Romans Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: -Timothy
Feeling The joy of others is indeed a good antidote for the ego.

Lol yeah that's a classic ego trick, a nice pat on the back for doing something good...! It seems like genuine selfless action, genuine love, is much harder than we realize. There's always some reward, even if it's just feeling like a good person. Joy for, or just focusing on others does seem to be the antidote. At least then I am not thinking about me. I agree totally, Buddha and Christ are both saying the same thing, all action has to happen on an inner level first
