Oats turning black?
    #26444815 - 01/21/20 12:55 PM (4 years, 8 days ago)

I have a couple backs of oats that I g2g some black pearl. But it’s starting to look like the oats are turning black. There are usually some darker ones in there but not like this... anyone experience this? Should I trash them?

Damn, I may try to fruit anyway. Was really hoping to expand. I recently moved and feel like my contam rate has drastically increased. It’s getting frustrating so I may have to switch my setup

Yeah, I wouldn't expand that at all, but it should be fine to fruit.

Dont worry i have a few "black seeds" IDK  Where they come from but they will not colonize i thought i had a contam in this round of jars but then i realized they where black since day one, will not colonize but don't spread maybe they got burned some how during packing/shippping or pc??

Yeah I also get black oats in the bag too but these ones are actually turning black as the colonize. I just haven’t seen this before and didn’t see any other posts about it. Just more curious why or what exactly is happening.

Are you sure the black ones aren't just becoming more noticeable since the mycelium is white?  I wanna say they were probably in there to begin with as well...

I don't know about oats, but when I work with rye I find a lot of black ones, which I discovered are actually taken over by ergot.

I’ll have to get another pic when I can. I can see normal ones that look like they’re turning black. I don’t know it seems too weird of a coincidence that one out of four bags has more black ones to start than the others you know? I’ll let  it colonize longer and see what happens.

well if all the oats came from the same original bag and you filled your four bags by scooping out or pouring them in, then all the black ones which had fallen to the bottom of the original bag would likely end up in the same one, the last one you filled.

But you've got a better view than us so you're probably right, let us know how it goes!
