fear of not being able to sleep before events is the only thing that stops me from sleeping 6

before events.
have you ever tried to see how quickly you could stop yourself from thinking? like how fast you could notice a thought appearing in your conscious mind, and then suppressing it?
gets deep when you start suppressing thoughts about how you are suppressing thoughts, and then suppressing thoughts about how you're experiencing an infinitely recursive internal dialectic
and then before you know it, you've forgotten to stop suppressing your thoughts, and it's totally unclear how you fell off the train. it just happens. it's clear that you have some amount of control over your mind, but that your mind is something that is not actually YOU, and that it does things you don't necessarily want whenever you don't keep a tight rein in on it.
with practice, i hope to become better and better at this

It's almost constant every night for me. I am a "night owl" person, always have been since I can remember. I had to train myself to go to sleep at 9pm and get up at 5:45am, still hard for me, but what I get out of it is SO worth it.
As soon as it's Friday I will stay awake (drugs or not) until about 1-2am easily, I do get sleepier around 10-11pm more now though.
My ideal schedule would be to go to bed around 2am and get up around 10am-12noon. Basically if I was retired that would be my schedule.

@tyrannical: How did you train yourself to sleep like that, anything in particular you can recommend?
---
If I have a big event the next day, or anything that I'm particularly anxious about I will lose a lot of sleep. Generally if I'm extremely anxious over something I will only get about 3-4 hours of sleep, and spend about 4 hours trying to fall asleep. Thankfully I have sleeping meds that I take, which if I take them properly I can have myself lights out within 1.5 hours of taking them, but that doesn't seem to work when I'm anxious.
Personally speaking I'm pretty scared I permafucked being able to sleep normally due to the all the stimulants and benzos I've taken. If I don't have my sleeping meds, it's borderline impossible for me to sleep every night, I'll usually end up sleeping every-other night.

I've been there.
Also what you're describing with suppressing thoughts is meditation. Some meditation is different, but zen meditation and most of the other major ones focus on suppressing thought like you're talking about.

I started with melatonin and benadryl combined. I tried not to take any sleep meds because I did not want to get dependent on them. Plus I started nursing school and that was one hell of a reason to comply. I also cut out all caffeine after 12 noon, and try not to eat after 7-8pm. No sodas of any kind or sugar after 7-8pm. I will lay in bed for hours and not sleep, but just laying there is actually resting.
I also would try to focus on the number one, just one thing and not let my mind get riled up and run away with random thoughts. It takes practice, but I got to where I could finally start sleeping at an appropriate time to get adequate sleep, which for me is 7-8 hours. Less than 5-6 hours and I'm pretty tired, but can handle it, it just sucks being tired and listless all day. I also wake up with enough time so I don't have to hurry/rush to get ready and then rush driving to work. I could sleep an extra hour, but I decided to go to bed an hour earlier. Just keep at the same schedule and eventually you should fall into a groove hopefully, good luck!

Solid advice thank you very much! Cutting out caffeine after 12 noon now that is a doozy haha but I can certainly see how it would help.
How do you find staying up late on the weekend impacts your ability to keep this kind of schedule up? Anytime I've gotten into a good sleeping schedule, if I stay up late on the weekend I always end up falling out of sync and abandoning the schedule.

Great advice from Rex. Some advice I could really use because I've been taking unisoms to get to sleep for a long time

That's just it, you have to cut the caffeine after noon, and stick to the schedule no matter what. Repetition makes it happen over time. Plus I never drink more than 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning as well. I was a speed smoking/crack smoking/coke/speed sniffing mothah! But the thought of being a 60-70yo waiter/bartender frightened me. Some people can do that. I chose not to, and I respect the ones that do because I was in that biz for 34 years. I'm starting to have slight hip, leg, and feet pains now, but I'm a nurse and I am damn glad I can sit as much as I do. I still dabble party, but not on work nights, and if I slip and do, I still go to bed before midnight. I use melatonin to sleep now, but only if I really "need" to.

Yeah I do that too, morrow. If I have something big the next day, especially something that has me nervous, it's a miracle if I get any sleep at all.

You're very welcome! It wasn't easy, but my drive to get to where I am now made it happen. Repetition, practice, and keep to it. Listen to others posts too, good info here. The key is to not rely on sleep meds eventually.

I just got my copy of Buddha's Book of Sleep. It suggests results in seven weeks. We shall see.

when you feel pain, you say to yourself, "this is what pain feels like"
when you feel fear, you say to yourself, "this is what fear feels like"
when you feel euphoria, you say to yourself, "this is what euphoria feels like"
try to stop your next thought. you might be able to do it. if you are paying close attention, you can experience the thought beginning to arise in your consciousness and snuff it out.
not forever, of course. eventually, you will have a thought. you may have many. you may wander off onto a thought train for 30 seconds before even realizing you've forgotten you're trying not to think.
when this happens, you say a simple mantra to yourself. something like "noted" or "I see you [, mind]". Do not judge the presence of the mind in your conscious experience, merely note it as quickly as possible.
there is a committee of thoughts and feelings fighting for your conscious attention. you have the capacity to choose who wins.

drugs are just one of many ways we escape from the noise of our minds.
we may spend our free time watching televsion, listening to music, or at the bar conversing.
this is not necessarily wrong, but it is a crutch.
imagine, since you can, a drug that multiples your imaginative abilities by 500%.
You'd want that... wouldn't you?
Imagination is a double-edged sword. While is the source of great beauty and awe, it is also the source of fear and suffering.
Imagine having PTSD, multiplied by 500%.
Imagination is only desirable or useful if one is skillful at selecting the contents of one's attention.
we can master the technique of quieting the noise of the mind. when we do, we attain true freedom.
Some people use mindfulness practices as a means to anesthetize themselves to the ills of the world while contributing to them.
These people are a distraction
