Flu does so by infecting about 100 million Americans.
COVID, being 3-5x more contagious, if it were to infect 100 million Americans, 20 million Americans would need hospital care which they cannot, and because of this, about 5 million people would die. That's a whole holocaust, in 1 year, in 1 country.
Tell that to the 300 million Americans our president just told that to.

I think go for your vitamins, Purell and such it helps a bit but mainly it's about not being in super crowded places, wash your hands often, don't do tons of shaking hands or giving hugs to people outside the family. Go to the docs if you have the symptoms basic things will save us here.

Face masks won’t do you any good. At a minimum you need a half mask respirator and training on how to use it. Purell doesn’t kill viruses. It’s a waste of money. Vitamins haven’t been shown to do nothing unless you have a known deficiency.

Here's a full break down of symptoms:
Quote:
https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/03/dont-panic-the-comprehensive-ars-technica-guide-to-the-coronavirus/ According to data from nearly 56,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients in China, the rundown of common symptoms went as follows:
88 percent had a fever 68 percent had a dry cough 38 percent had fatigue 33 percent coughed up phlegm 19 percent had shortness of breath 15 percent had joint or muscle pain 14 percent had a sore throat 14 percent headache 11 percent had chills 5 percent had nausea or vomiting 5 percent had nasal congestion 4 percent had diarrhea Less than one percent coughed up blood or blood-stained mucus Less than one percent had watery eyes
Seems the great majority of people barely have symptoms that say "this is a cold" much less ones that say "this is a serious illness."
Testing for those that aren't seriously ill is almost entirely voluntary and not every doctor's office has a test so people have to go out of the way to get it.
I don't know about other countries but I know very few Americans that would do that for a dry cough. Few enough would even consider going to their doctor. Especially since the media blew up and keeps comparing it to the flu, most people are probably expecting that they get hit like a truck when they have this thing. I kinda was.
Not expecting that less than a third even produce phlegm, have sore throat, or shortness of breath.
After reading this I have absolutely no doubt it's going severely under recorded. And because of that the mortality rate is going to be way off. Because again, people who are seriously ill are more likely to be tested.
I've had a headache and chest pain and joint aches, constant cough and a very slight occasional runny nose for a couple days. Didn't even think about if it might be the big CV until today.
Actually didn't even know I was sick until I got my mom sick. I was just getting over a mono flare up. Felt pretty crappy, that's been pretty normal. More aches than usual and the chest pain was new but I'm prone to pleurisy and costochondritis so... had no idea it was a contagious thing until my mom mentioned having the same symptoms yesterday.
It's really fucking easy to dismiss these types of symptoms. And that's going to get easier in areas that are prone to seasonal allergies.

So forcing the air you breathe to be heavily filtrated, specifically down to small enough levels that block viruses, before it enters your body won't protect you from a virus? I think you don't know what you're talking about. It's just one mechanism of defense we can add to our total arsenal. This is basic science.
Also, hand sanitizer can be effective at protecting yourself from COVID19, if you get the right kind. You must get the kind that contains at least 60% alcohol, as recommended by the CDC. You should only use sanitizer when you can't use warm water and soap. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/election-polling-locations.html

Chris Dude I could give a shit less whether I get it. I'll more than likely be ok. It's the elderly and kids I'm worried about. I have both. I dont want them sick.
Seriously I got multi vitamins, Ibuprofen, tylenol, a shit ton of canned vegs and meats, rice, noodles, water, drinks, soap, salt, bullets, alchohol, then I already have somewhat of a stash. I grow mushrooms. I have a case of masks and gloves. Tyvek suit. I got my garden and I'll eat the local opossum if shit get tough.
I foresee time off work where I keep everyone out of my yard and only venture out if its dire. Major gardening action.

Okay, so at first you said "face masks won't do you any good." Now you are saying "they do very little." So, you are now admitting face masks do help.

Why are you singling out Purell? Any hand sanitizer that doesn't contain alcohol is worthless with COVID19 and viruses. There are many types of hand sanitizers. Let's talk about them in general and not just one company because that's misleading.
"90% alcohol rubs are highly flammable, but kill many kinds of viruses, including enveloped viruses such as the flu virus, the common cold virus, coronaviruses ... [19][20][21][22] ... 90% alcohol rubs are more effective against viruses than most other forms of hand washing." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_sanitizer

I think that if you want to protect yourself with a face mask you should use a half mask respirator. The problem being that they introduce a fair bit of respiratory fatigue. For example, to wear one in industry you have to pass medical examination to even be allowed for fit testing. Once you pass the exam, you can then proceed to fit testing. To pass fit testing you have yet another hurdle, and it requires special equipment to even conduct the fit test. From there, you have to know when and how tell if equipment is damaged, if filters need replaced, etc.. That's more training. I'm willing to bet a very small fraction of people in the world know about any of that. So, like the article stays, people are best of not worrying about face masks at all.
I singled Purell out because I specifically said Purell. That shouldn't be hard.

Four horsemen of the apocalypse
And I saw when the lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him; and he went forth conquering and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see though hurt not the oil and the wine. And when he had opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat upon him was Death and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with the sword, and with hunger, and with death and with the beasts of the earth."
Revelations 6:1-17
