Then again I don't subscribe to the apocalyptic narrative.

When did facts become a narrative though? There's nothing apocalyptic being said here, we're discussing real-life events as they unfold.

Hundreds of thousands will die, millions will get sick for weeks and months, an undetermined number will suffer long-term and even lifelong consequences, nearly every economist is predicting a massive recession or even depression.

So because infinitedreams says he's doing fine right now, none of that will pose issues?

Or are you one of the ones viewing life through a nihilistic narrative, lazily trying to pass it off as being rational?

You choose which facts to repeat and which to ignore to support a narrative.

Nothing apocalyptic?

Bad shit going down doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. A lot of people are gonna suffer when it could have easily been prevented with proper policies and enforcement. Semantics dude lol

How so? I've had multiple posts about family members who've recovered, many posts about how well the state I'm in has responded, I've shared promising therapeutics and vaccine research, optimism about quality of care and outcomes, etc. The fact that you want to pigeon hole me into some narrative that only you can see is odd.

No. Reality.

Concern seems healthy and logical in the current climate, yes. I personally am not afraid or panicked, but I am deeply concerned about the well being of many people I love who have already been affected, and others who are at risk. I'm also troubled by having a government who's response so far has prioritized political gain over the wellbeing, both physically and financially, of its citizens.

The ones in this thread, in the media, in government offices etc who downplay a pandemic because it's easy to say "that's life", or simply turn a blind eye to what is staring us in the face.

COVID-19 aka. SARS-CoV-2 - Main Thread on the Novel Coronavirus Pandemic

Corona is on the rise, including to the top of the Pub again after a staff vote.

Please: no secret bioweapon conspiracy shadow government blame theories.

Also, can the "it's just a flu" remarks.

Please treat each other civilly and post content that CONTRIBUTES to the thread.

This thread is more moderated than the average Pub thread but less so than a science thread.

This is for the relatively-more informed to discuss for the benefit of all, primarily.

Hope everyone is doing well. More and more of my friends and acquaintances are coming down sick with covid. One had to be hospitalized for 5 days but is back home and getting better now. Many symptomatic people are turning up to the hospital and being sent home immediately without even being tested and simply told to quarantine because of increasingly limited resources. Somehow I still havent caught it, which almost certainly speaks to the efficacy of PPE when it is used CORRECTLY.

So glad you didnt come down with a bad case of it yet while at ground zero!

You say the efficacy of PPE when it is used CORRECTLY, but what I'm hoping is that there is a level of immunity in some people (like 1% wont get sick of HIV) and that you have it.

Welcome back Morrowasted, you sort of had it, before, but seem to have gotten a second wind.

Is it true that 9in Houston regular ICU capacity is exceeeded?

Will it become a Code Black situation where the stretchers are lined up along the corridors or is the system holding?

Thanks. Our normal ICU is at 100% capacity. Two of the med surg units have been converted into units that are for covid patients. They have most of the implements you see in the ICU but are reserved for slightly less severe cases. Many ED rooms are essentially functioning as ICU beds right now because we have to find ICU beds for severe patients in galveston and other surrounding cities. We dont have covid patients in beds lining the hallways, though, like I saw in some of the videos from NYC.

Coronavirus: Japan's mysteriously low virus death rate

Japan still only has had under 1000 deaths total

Japan has 20000 cases and 977 deaths. That’s a CFR of 4.8% which is about average for death rates. Certainly nothing special. Ghana has 20,000 cases and less than 200 deaths. That seems extremely low

What do you all think about taking a shower after going out? It's always a big thing for me, and it's a pain in the butt, but I'm OCD and also want to be on the safe side. Is the mask enough?

lets put it this way - it won't hurt, it's good for relaxing your muscles and your body, which puts you in good health, it keeps you looking clean and hygenic, which is always a good thing, and viruses melt in 20 seconds under soap like the wicked witch of the west.

provided you're not damaging your skin by washing several times a day and drying your skin and hair out that way, it's a good thing. also a cool shower is a godsend for getting your temp down in this heat if you don't have AC, like me. <.<

Try Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap in a cold shower. It is COLD.

I usually brush my teeth after coming back home too. Cleaning groceries is very long and annoying.

I shower once a week.  A clean petri dish grows bacteria better than a dirty contaminated one.  Also I avoid hand sanitizer.  Old school soap is all that is needed.  Keep your natural flora.  No need to build a super bug within my flora.  I social distance, mask in stores etc...  no need to be OCD.

I fear older overweight people in demanding jobs forced to wear a mask is more detrimental overall than a possible 8-10 day sickness.  Hoping a vaccine is discovered.  The United States is about to see a huge jump in positive tests after the fourth.  Seems to be a party at every house.  Never seen this before.  So many people up in each others business.  I almost feel if they had left the fields open and the city firework shows we could have had an easier time getting out “on our own”. Rather than feeling obligated going to friends or family members houses for the “4th”...

And we live in the United States.  Mexicans are American too.

i told myself that with the showering thing too... then i realized i was a natural with social distancing because no one would get near me at all, clean clothes or not, because my natural flora were rubbish at keeping me staying pleasant smelling, even though i have a sensitive nose and couldn't tell at all.

once i started washing daily, i realized that apparently, you CAN desensitize your nose to quite a lot, given long time exposure!

you gotta remember, natural flora and fauna are mostly bacteria and fungi, not viruses. they have a much more complicated outer layer that resists plain old hand soap, as well as things like biofilms to help cling to surfaces. they ain't gonna freak out over a bit of dove and hand washing. antibacterial soap maybe, but there's no need to break out the big guns here for your whole body. ;3

and there's absolutely nothing to worry about with overweight people wearing masks. i'm a fatty who has to wear a mask all day, and so are plenty of my coworkers. we're doing just fine thank you. sure it's unpleasant sometimes, but it's just a mask. air gets through just fine, no matter what it actually feels like.

that's all it really boils down to, panicky feelings of suffocating because people aren't used to having something over their face. if you pay attention to it, it gets worse. ignore the sensations, and it gets much easier.
