Absolutely. For all the nationalistic pride I see here, I've never known a place so seemingly at war with itself.
Hence why we see the results we do in the way that this pandemic is unfolding the way that it is here. There's no unity, no solidarity, just division.
Hell, more than half the people I call my friends in this country engage in a quite eloquent form of self torture by virtue of loving the American dream and then hating the fact that it's not true or real.

Florida Changes ICU Reporting
Quote:
As more and more hospitals publicly report that their ICU beds are full, the state changed its guideline for tracking who is in its ICU beds — a change that will mask the true number of people in Florida’s intensive care units as the state struggles to keep pace with the coronavirus pandemic.
Why?
Some hospitals in the state may be using their ICU beds for non-critical-care coronavirus patients — people who need isolation but don’t need the most intensive level of care. And late Tuesday, at least a half-dozen South Florida hospitals had filled their ICU beds. To ensure hospitals are not overwhelmed, Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Mary Mayhew has repeatedly said the state needs to keep a close eye — in real time — on how many ICU beds are available regardless of how sick the people are in those beds.
I also found out today that the FL Department of Health is not including positive antibody tests in the COVID numbers, leaving out people who may have been asymptomatic or maybe had mild symptoms. In my county, it's a difference of about 1,100 cases. In Miami Dade county, it's a difference of over 3,000 cases. They're only reporting people who get really sick and need hospitalization.
I cannot blame that fired FL data scientist. This shit would make me punch someone.

Jesus SITR, what a clusterfuck.
All along my concern has been for us maxing out our ICU capacity, knowing this thing was gonna do its thing regardless. And for a little while, it looked like we might be able to steady ourselves just enough.
But no, because people - in general/en masse - had to be selfish assholes and fight common sense.
I feel sorry for the people and families suffering right now.

Wow, I think this is massively under-reported. Some of people never get better. Scary stuff.
Yea, nurses and doctors in Boston have been reporting a whole lot of people coming in with lasting symptoms, permanent damage in peoples' kidneys, hearts, lungs etc, being unable to stand or walk for long periods... even deaths from those causes shortly after "recovery". My cousin who had it took at least 2 months before she could really function again, I haven't talked to her in a bit but she really couldn't shake the breathing troubles.
Then there's this:
Quote:
One in three patients who recover from coronavirus could be harmed for life, with long-term damage to their lungs, as well as chronic fatigue and psychological disturbances, research suggests.
Experts said there was growing evidence that the virus could cause persistent or even permanent trauma, including impairment to the brain and an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/06/22/revealed-scars-covid-19-could-last-life-doctors-warn-long-term/
Even asymptomatic people may have an alarming rate of long-term damage:
Quote:
The authors also conclude that the absence of symptoms may not imply an absence of harm. CT scans conducted on 54% of 76 asymptomatic individuals on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, appear to show significant subclinical lung abnormalities, raising the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 infection impacting lung function that might not be immediately apparent.

Actually you are mistaken. Especially vitamin D is very strongly corrolated with outcomes of COVID-19.
The East Virginia School of medicine recommends a regimen of several supplements to be taken both as a prophylactic as well s in case of disease.

They are even given on COVID wards.
In addition to that, Sodium Ascorbate IV's, the sodium salt of vitamin C, are given in high doses intravenously on respirator wards and, seemingly to good effect.
Melatonin is known to help prevent cytokine storms, etc.
So, The Atlantic is mistaken supplements have a valuable and potentially life saving role in preventing and treating COVID-19.
So, "vitamins are bullshit" is out the window. Its a blanket statement over a myriad of supplements that has been definitively proven to be incorrect. We drop this from the discussion.

The fucked up thing is that it has been reported and known for quite sometime. Nobody seems to be listening, though. We've got too many people stuck on "just a flu" mentality. It's going to be way too late before enough people start taking this seriously.

siege mentality noun a state of mind whereby one believes that one is being constantly attacked, oppressed, or isolated.
It's absolutely pervasive in the USA. Of course, everyone is 'out to get you' and 'lying' and therefore the truth must be the opposite of what one is told.
It's really the epitome of madness.

Travelers to the tri-state area from states seeing COVID-19 outbreaks will have to self-quarantine for 14 days, effective at midnight, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday. Cuomo, in conjunction with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, cited growing coronavirus cases across the country as the impetus for the move, which he argued will help preserve the reopening efforts for NY, NJ and CT. The threshold for a state requiring its travelers to quarantine will be either a 10% infection rate for COVID-19 testing, or 10 new cases per 100,000 people on a seven day rolling average. States immediately affected under those criteria include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Utah and Texas...

Not sure how they plan to enforce this.

People are like "the deathrate is low so its not important".
Thats a starting point assumption.
First, very many people need hospitalization, for long Secondly, very many people need to occupy a ventilator, for long Thirdly, there is more and more reporting of lasting lung, kidney and heart damage.
So even if you dont keel over dead that doesnt mean its a bit of sickness and its over.

hey vinsue, back in late March when things were juuuust starting to kind of really go to shit, I heard rumors of NJ cops stopping people at the county lines and taking temperatures and stuff and not letting them pass? AFAIK, nothing like that ever really happened across the bridge here, but things were also significantly less severe. Just was wondering whether you can confirm or deny?
Someones gonna sue someone and there's not going to be any real legal precedent to limit travel like this, I would think...from my days as a keyboard lawyer/doctor/expert .

Are there any actual credible/recent studies though? I haven't checked recently, but seems like there's really not anything convincing about supplements and COVID. The doctors in the virginia med school thing you posted admitted that their suggestions were pretty much just a guess based upon shaky research.
The ones that started the Vitamin D hype were basically saying that people who were already severely ill and/or in organ failure (which has been been linked to vitamin D depletion) because of COVID had less Vitamin D when they tested them... which was after the disease would have depleted their vitamin D. The researchers really seemed to be stretching the correlation to get their publishing brownie points. There's also the issue that the elderly, who percentage wise probably spend most of their time indoors or be in care facilities, are most harmed by COVID (and most disease) and also most likely to have lower vit D levels, which could greatly skew the numbers, even if the vit D itself played no role.
They've found a vitamin D link to CRP and cytokine storms... but there's a million things that modulate CRP. Even the study that used that as their explanation only had like a 3% increase in severe COVID with vit D deficiency, that could easily be confounding variables associated with the type of person who might have low vit D or cultural/genetics differences. Countries that have higher vitamin D levels likely spend more time outside and in environments less conducive to a virus spreading, as well as possibly the health benefits that outdoor activity often entails. Although Brazil isn't looking too great right now.
That said, everyone should probably get their vit D for many reasons, it's just weird hearing comics and late night TV hosts now pumping vitamin D and acting like the government is neglecting it's citizens by not selling them supplements. Viral immunity isn't really a 1+1 = 2 kinda thing, except when it comes to keeping said virus out of your face holes.
