We are well and truly fucked until there is an effective vaccine, gentlemen and ladies. Our best hope is perhaps that some of the strains cause weak illnesses like other coronaviruses and those are the ones that end up getting a foothold during each cycle.
I know we don’t know but do you figure surviving a weaker strain will build you a resistance to a stronger strain?

Yes that’s what I heard. Who knows with this virus though. Genetically modified viruses probably behave differently though.

That's nice, I never lost my freedom.
I guess this guy got his freedom back, too. Too bad he didn't 'lay hands' on himself.

Current death rate in local area nursing homes, my grandmother's included, is almost exactly 25% thus far - with the worst hit facilities looking more like 26-28%. Lines up almost perfectly with the NYC CFR broken down by ages. Curiously I've noticed that the exact same percentage of people in both clusters died(total cases 40 - 5 dead in one cluster, 5 in the other) - one was in an area for more active, healthier people..the other was in skilled nursing, where my gram is, where people in various stages of serious medical diseases that require 24/7 medical attention are hanging out. I'm gonna see if I can parse through some local nursing home data a little more to see what's going on in other facilities. Open Data initiatives ftw.
My grandma has been asymptomatic for about 3 days now(day number 9 since symptom onset), and is starting to get back to normal, eating, talking, starting to be a little more active, in good spirits. I can only hope that I kick this things ass as hard as she did if and when I get it myself. I am still hoping and meditating on it, and I am still worried about a fast decline, but my fingers are crossed for a negative covid test for her in another week.

Likely the mutations that affect virulence will not have a significant impact on immunity.

At the local nursing home, 10 out of 48 residents have died so far.
I think in the end it will be genetics that turns out to be the most important factor in how someone fares with covid, so the fact your grandmother handled it well despite her age will mean you would have a better chance of faring well.

Not following what you said. “Impact on immunity”? The virus is not immune to anything. Humans build immunities to virus. The cool thing is whenever a virus gets broken into pieces those pieces are able to recombine with other’s to create a new virus. Maybe the immune system would recognize a piece from the older virus and creat an immune response. Idk.

Still a long way off. Even when the state fully moves to modified reopening in June. They were very adamant about that. When she tests negative then I'm going to ask about hanging out with her outside though.

Yeah, I'm hopeful about that, and not really worried about myself as much. There's still a couple of people in my family, including a medically complex 2 year old that this could royally mess up, and I'm low key hoping that I've already had it and it was pretty much asymptomatic or something I chalked up to allergies or a cold. Seems too easy though.

Not following what you said. “Impact on immunity”? The virus is not immune to anything. Humans build immunities to virus.
minor mutations that affect virulence will not give the virus the ability to evade the acquired immunity from a previous exposure. Is that better?
If the virus changes enough the immune response may not be complete, but partial immunity is still very beneficial. Most of our flu vaccines only impart partial immunity, but that is enough to prevent serious illness.

A lot of these antibody tests have a hard time distinguishing between antibodies for SARS CoV-2 and the other coronaviruses that cause common colds. I’m curious if having one of these colds in the past year or so might provide some level of immunity against covid.

Speaking to that thought, from a chemistry point of view, is it safe to say that the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS/MERS is similar to the relationship between 1P-LSD and LSD?
