This was a great read from the NIH on the story of influenza.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK22148/
It talks about the US reactions during the 1918 pandemic. If you don't want to read the whole thing, I get it, but check out the section titled "Social Disruption and Public Health Lessons".
Quote:
This pattern repeated itself again and again. Chicago offers one example: Its public health commissioner said he'd do “nothing to interfere with the morale of the community…. It is our duty to keep the people from fear. Worry kills more people than the epidemic” (Robertson, 1918).
That idea—“Fear kills more than the disease”—became a mantra nationally and in city after city. As Literary Digest, one of the largest circulation periodicals in the country, advised, “Fear is our first enemy” (Van Hartesveldt, 1992).
In Philadelphia, when the public health commissioner closed all schools, houses of worship, theaters, and other public gathering places, one newspaper went so far as to say that this order was “not a public health measure” and reiterated that “there is no cause for panic or alarm.”
But as people heard these reassurances, they could see neighbors, friends, and spouses dying horrible deaths.
In Chicago, the Cook County Hospital mortality rate of all influenza admissions—not just those who developed pneumonia—was 39.8 percent (Keeton and Cusman, 1918). In Philadelphia, bodies remained uncollected in homes for days, until eventually open trucks and even horse-drawn carts were sent down city streets and people were told to bring out the dead. The bodies were stacked without coffins and buried in cemeteries in mass graves dug by steam shovels.
This horrific disconnect between reassurances and reality destroyed the credibility of those in authority. People felt they had no one to turn to, no one to rely on, no one to trust.
During this time, the US had a law in place that forbade people from speaking out against the government as part of the war effort. No matter what happened, the media had to put a positive spin on it or they could go to jail. In the meantime, people could see lots of death, so there was a disconnect which led to mistrust. It's estimated that approximately 675,000 Americans lost their lives to Spanish Flu.

Oh, I can do that online? Is it some sort of symptom survey? Or is it one of those 23 and me things, where you send in a tube full of all your DNA?

A little old at three weeks.
Make sense of that, would ya?
I'm at a loss for words.
Sounds like she's describing a flu virus.

The White House is absolutely covering up the extent of the outbreak amongst staffers in the west wing. April Ryan is reporting someone very high up is infected. My guess is Pence.
An Air Force General was tested before a meeting with trump yesterday, but came up positive. The rapid test they are using has a fairly high rate of false negatives as well.

It was only a matter of time .
Especially given that a good chunk of them absolutely refuse to wear masks.

So my last post regarding my grandmother's nursing home was left at about 30 cases including several(I believe 5? with 4 recovered) staff members. I stopped by there last week to drop off some slippers. Got side-eyed hard by staff members as I was walking in, but I just stopped in the very front exterior doors(you then have to proceed through another set of doors to get through to the actual lobby) to drop off slippers - which is what reception instructed me to do, and it was very much no-contact.
Anyway, my point is that the death toll has risen essentially overnight from 3 to 11. This is including a good chunk of young, healthy, staff members in that pool of confirmed cases. Though I do not think that any staff members have passed, and things change day to day(so the confirmed cases may have gone up as well as the death toll. It's hard to get an accurate number)I know there are some older and more vulnerable people who are social workers and directors there though.
This is in a facility that is doing everything they possibly can to do everything right. I thought for a brief second that maybe for some obscure and irrational reason, that people would be spared here. I don't know why. Maybe just clinging to some hope. But reality is proving to be a different beast. This is not a joke, and this is not the flu. Flu season is an absolute breeze compared to this.

The masks don't help. They barely help you spreading it to others. But no one wears them correctly anyway and besides that they use their hands stupidly so it's really moot.
Whole foods yesterday. Everyone other person had the mask only over their mouth not their nose. Employees pulling theirs down to talk lol.

If I’m out I’m wearing a mask and wearing it correctly
And I don’t like to agree with you ... but you’re right
Tbh though even if studies say cloth masks don’t help at all if that’s what I got that’s what I’m wearing
It just makes sense in my little brain that some barrier is better than no barrier

Masks help if used correctly and in densely packed areas probably help evem when used somewhat incorrectly. I am the first to admit i dont use anything like hospital grade infection control precautions when i am at the market but a simple surgical mask over mouth and nose worn from start to finish while shopping will absolutely reduce your own personal likelihood of getting infected by the air circulating in the store. Saying masks dont work for personal protection because people use them wrong is like saying guns dont work for personal protection because people use them wrong. Nothing works if you use it wrong. Use it right.

For those who didnt catch the heads up:
They've looked into Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine deeper and sorry to say - it just doesnt help like the Chinese study seemed to suggest.
Donate your chloroquine to an aquarium enthusiast, it won't do you any good with COVID.

thanks
I’m back at work in a hot kitchen
the bitch of the mask is that if I HAVE to drink water
I’ll dehydrate cramp up and collapse if I don’t
So every hour I wash my hands change gloves wash out my cup remove the mask and down about 24 ounces of water and put it back on
Don’t see any way around it
How are y’all dealing with plain old thirst?

The way people wear their masks wouldn't protect them from sawdust. Let alone aerosols.
