1 out of every 1000 New York State residents has died of covid-19 (1 out of 550 In NYC - that’s a .18 mortality rate - already double the CFR of the flu and 10x-20x the mortality rate of the flu)

The death rate from seasonal flu is typically around 0.1% in the U.S.

So 1.8x times more like, a magnitude of difference lower than 10x-20x.

Mortality rate is deaths/population. 30,000 to 60,000 people die from the flu in the US every year. 30,000/330,000,000 = .009% low or .018% high

The mortality rate of covid is AT least .18% (if nobody else died, but we aren’t even half way through deaths)

.18% is 10 times higher than the high end mortality rate for the flu.

The thing about mortality rates is the number of cases is irrelevant

It will be interesting the see general mortality rates after all this is done. All this social distancing is going to practically eliminate other infectious diseases as well. New cases of flu and STDs are going to plummet. Auto accident rates are going to plummet too.

So California filled a popular skate park with 37 tons of sand to keep skaters from coming

And instead people just started going there with dirt bikes

In what world do we use total population to calculate mortality rate?

Deaths/cases with outcomes is the mortality rate. Otherwise it's a useless metric.

Fucking progressive isn't doing shit, even though my car is barely being driven at all :crankey:

They actually are overcharging me by like 40 bucks because they switched me back to my Philadelphia address(I didn't even use Progressive there? I guess they got it from the dmv, but I changed my address there too, even though my license still says Philly). I emailed those fuckers proof of residency a while back and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Progressive is offering a 20% refund at the end of April and again at the end of May if your policy is active.

Lol what? Deaths per case is the case fatality rate.  Death/population deaths is the mortality rate. AKA deaths per capita . Whenever you see deaths per 100,000 for example. That is the mortality rate.

you're gonna wanna follow up on that proof of residency.  theres a good chance if they didnt get to it already than they aren't going to. depending on how long its been.

And if you've got the spare time, see if they'll do a policy review for you.  My bill decreased by $20 a month.  They asked me some questions about my job and where I live.

Right on, thanks for the tips guys. I guess I have to get on the phone and use a little polite persuasion.

On another note, we just got a call from my grandmas nursing home. Case count went from 7 with 1 death and 1 hospitalization, to 16 cases with the death tally now up to 3.

This is downstairs from my grandmother who in a higher level of care. It's all sequestered off now, and there are even some RN's that work with my grandmother's section who are locking down with everyone. No one comes in, no one goes out.

It's scary, but damn, I am impressed with how well this facility has been dealing with it. They're kind of a jesus-freak place, but they have been so forthcoming, communicable, and kind. And more than ever I'm super happy that it's only RNs that work with my grandmother instead of a bunch of overworked underpaid CNAs who are in over their head.

There's no excuse for abandoning people in a care home during this time, but 12 dollars(I've seen some that pay as low as 10!) a fucking hour isn't enough even in the best of times.
