The steroid connection is interesting. I read about a case of a man in his late 40s who died days after visiting his doctor and being given corticosteroids (doctor did not test or screen for covid). Reasonable to surmise this played a role in his dramatic turn fir the worse?

Yikes. 27% of hospitalized patients develop heart damage from the virus. This may have significant long term consequences.

Surviving this thing is one thing and a likely outcome; a lifetime of chronic health issues is another thing entirely.

I'm no virus expert but I find it so strange on how wide the spectrum is as far as the widely varying degrees of this virus' ability to be lethal.

Most deaths of course are attributed to advanced age and/or previously underlying health issues, but it has also killed some who aren't of advanced age and had no previous underlying health issues. And then there are people walking around with little to no symptoms at all who have tested positive.

Those are the cases that really perplex me -- the fact that one could have this virus in them and yet conceivably be perfectly fine otherwise and don't even show symptoms of even a minor cold.

Fuck me.  A relative is in ICU now, and the doctors said they suspected he'd had a heart attack (whilst sedated and intubated).  Things are not looking good.

You are misinterpreting the study. It's saying that 27% of patients who were diagnosed presented with pre-existing myocardial injury.

Quote:

In this case series study of 187 patients with COVID-19, 27.8% of patients had myocardial injury, which resulted in cardiac dysfunction and arrhythmias.

The pre-existing injury resulted in increased dysfunction during the course of infection. It does say

Quote:

Although the exact pathophysiological mechanism underlying myocardial injury caused by COVID-19 is not fully understood, a previous report showed that in 35% of the patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) infection, the SARS-CoV genome was positively detected in the heart. This raises the possibility of direct damage of cardiomyocytes by the virus.11 SARS-CoV-2 may share the same mechanism with SARS-COV because the 2 viruses are highly homologous in genome.12,13 In the current study, plasma TnT levels were significantly positively linear correlated with plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (Figure 2), indicating that myocardial injury may be closely associated with inflammatory pathogenesis during the progress of disease. Viral particles spread through respiratory mucosa and simultaneously infect other cells, which could precipitate a cytokine storm and a series of immune responses. Huang et al5 highlighted that in patients with COVID-19, the imbalance of T helper 1 and T helper 2 responses resulted in a cytokine storm, which may contribute to myocardial injury. The release of inflammatory cytokines after infection may cause reduction in coronary blood flow, decreases in oxygen supply, destabilization of coronary plaque, and microthrombogenesis.

But it doesn't give any specific data about the extent of damage caused by the virus

Yes it does. 27.8% had acute myocardial injury just as I stated.

Quote:

Of 187 patients, 66 (35.3%) had underlying CVD including hypertension, coronary heart disease, and cardiomyopathy, and 52 (27.8%) exhibited myocardial injury as indicated by elevated TnT levels.

I don't think it is saying that.  I believe the presence of troponin T indicates recent heart damage (within 7 days ish).

"On admission, none showed evidence of acute myocardial infarction"

elevated TnT levels on admission. The purpose of the study is to look at how the elevated TnT levels relates to complications and various treatments. People who already have CVD of some kind get cardiac ischemia from the virus and their troponin goes up, so when they present, it's already elevated. Only 15 people in the cohort presented with elevated troponin without an underlying history of CVD. In people without CVD they didn't see a significant increase in Troponin during the course of hospitalization

Quote:

Both TnT and NT-proBNP levels increased significantly during the course of hospitalization in those who ultimately died, but no such dynamic changes of TnT or NT-proBNP levels were evident in survivors.

the elevated troponin level is closely associated with mortality

I'd be willing to bet good money that most of the younger athletes who are dying have undiagnosed congenital heart disease

They are just clarifying that the elevated troponin is due to the viral cardiomyopathy and not due a recent MI

same all over Quebec. I don't know about other provinces in Canada.

Many grocery stores, convenience stores and alcohol stores ask you if you have symptoms. If you don't, they ask you to wash your hands before entering. 1 person per group max.

Reminds me of movies where the bank teller is behind those huge plexiglass walls. It used to be for protecting the tellers from bank robbers now its to protect from COVID-19!

You should read it again.

Quote:

The mortality during hospitalization was 7.62% (8 of 105) for patients without underlying CVD and normal TnT levels, 13.33% (4 of 30) for those with underlying CVD and normal TnT levels, 37.50% (6 of 16) for those without underlying CVD but elevated TnT levels, and 69.44% (25 of 36) for those with underlying CVD and elevated TnTs.
