That sounds like something someone that knows their phone calls are being listened to would say.

It does. It also sounds like someone that knows that panic doesn't help anything.

Apparently an area with a total of 400 million people is currently under quarantine in China. Just wanted to point out: that's more than the entire population of the US. Something to think about.
Panic doesn't help, but neither does pretending that everything is fine. Both of those are equally bad for different reasons. There's a good balance that needs to be struck where one is aware, informed, and vigilant, but not panicked.

Panic is the fear of Death. Everybody fears Death. Unless you are next level in spirituality and realize the Soul is eternal and dying is a "cycle".
Im definitely not there but its something to think about.
Also would be a good idea to get some high-quality face masks. Like military grade.

The more reasonable fear here is the potential for disruption of global commerce and travel, resulting in a global recession.

Two colleagues are planning to go to Japan next week. The trip I declined on
Luckily it now seems some epic bad weather is going to delay most flights coming week. Still hoping for the whole thing to be canceled
Last week I also purchased a bunch of the meds and vitamins adviced. Never looked for online asparin and stuff, but damn I have been paying way too much for that sort of thing in shops

The silver lining being a massive reduction in co2. Wonder what the graphs will reveal aftert this is over.
I recall hearing that there was a measurable reduction in air pollution across Europe during the flight ban during the volcanic eruption in Iceland: Found it: "The volcano released approximately 150,000 tonnes of CO2 each day, but the massive reduction of air travel occurring over European skies caused by the ash cloud, saved an estimated 1.3 to 2.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere by 19 April 2010".
Swings and roundabouts, but the earth, and all that survive, might breath easier if this becomes pandemic.

I read that too, but its not correct.
Quote:
The CDC said:
An estimated one third of the world's population (or ≈500 million persons) were infected and had clinically apparent illnesses (1,2) during the 1918–1919 influenza pandemic. The disease was exceptionally severe. Case-fatality rates were >2.5%, compared to <0.1% in other influenza pandemics (3,4). Total deaths were estimated at ≈50 million (5–7) and were arguably as high as 100 million (7).
The impact of this pandemic was not limited to 1918–1919. All influenza A pandemics since that time, and indeed almost all cases of influenza A worldwide (excepting human infections from avian viruses such as H5N1 and H7N7), have been caused by descendants of the 1918 virus, including "drifted" H1N1 viruses and reassorted H2N2 and H3N2 viruses. The latter are composed of key genes from the 1918 virus, updated by subsequently incorporated avian influenza genes that code for novel surface proteins, making the 1918 virus indeed the "mother" of all pandemics.

that only says that it was greater than 2.5%, not that it was estimated to be 2.5%. if 500,000,000 were infected and 50,000,000 died, that would be 10%. If 100,000,000 died that would be 20%, hence the common estimate of 10-20% fatality rate. https://rybicki.blog/2018/04/11/1918-influenza-pandemic-case-fatality-rate/

With the current population size, by those figures and assuming a large proportion of people get infected, the total mortality could potentially match or exceed that of the Spanish flu.

The Spanish Flu had an initial wave, then a second wave that was much more lethal. What you usually see is that it becomes more infectious but less lethal. Lethality can, however,k increase.
There is a mortality discrepancy between the Wuhan area and outside of it. This might mean there are 2 strains, one highly infectious and one highly lethal. Imagine those coming together in a patient and a new mutation.
