Easiest grain to work with?
    #26443589 - 01/20/20 05:47 PM (4 years, 27 days ago)

I know this is a subjective question from checking posts on the topic already, but I would like to get further opinions. I'm looking for suggestions on the easiest grain to start with. By that I mean which in your opinion is easiest to get the moisture content right, least likely to contam, etc.
Thanks in advance.

I followed Bod's oats tek to the letter and have had zero issues.
For me, I leave them to dry overnight in the refrigerator and they are perfect every time.
I use a still air box, mason jars with metal lids, and poly for the filter.

bodโ€™s oat tek is super simple & has worked well for me. as long as you can find a place to buy the oats youโ€™re golden.

hereโ€™s the tek:

No grain is more or less contam resistant. They a contaminate the same.

Easiest to work with grain(s) imo is wild bird seed.

Documentation out the ass for years and years and the prep is basic(like most grains)

I soak my wbs for 12-18ish hours drain in a large strainer and load. No steam drying, no timed boils, no heat no bs.

I think BRF/Verm is the "easiest" which is why PF Tek is recommended to beginners.  Rye/Oats come in second for me or maybe WBS.  As long as you follow a trusted TEK they are all about the same difficulty, just slightly different precautions/procedures.

I'm trying to step up from pf tek. I've read about wbs being somewhat difficult to get the moisture content correct on. I'm leaning toward oats. Thanks for the suggestion a tek too

Agree with mushboy, wbs, but instead of a 24hr process, mine are ready in about 3hrs. Perfect everytime, easy.
See Foo Man's wbs method.

Im on WBS at the moment but it's all pretty basic stuff. Like they said. Either cook your grins till they are just under fully hydrated and dry them out before loading in jars or soak em and load wet. It's cheap get a bag of each and find out for yourself what you like better. I recommend cooking up jars for practice then when your done you just open em and dump out the grain to inspect your work. You want the grain to be cooked all the way through after the PC cycle but not soggy wet.  Try a few prep teks and find your fav. Then your not wasting good cultures on shity grain jars.

You donโ€™t do any wash or pulling of the floating seeds and sunflower hulls?  Just soak with cold water and pc?  Is this a tek somewhere? Sounds much easier!

Wheat and Rye are the easiest to work with.  Oats are a little trickier to get hydration and moisture right.  Never worked with WBS, but don't you have to pick out the sunflower seeds?  That seems a little tedious.

You can. But you dont have too. Dig around my links you'll find it.

Some brands barely have sfs.

Never done bulk but i'm considering rye. I read that millet is supposed to be very good, i got no idea what the preparations are like for it though

WBS  Pro Easy and works well  Con  More Expensive than Oats
Oats  Pro Bod made a tek that is awesome  Cheep too..    Con  If you like to drink you can over boil them and release to much starch
Wheat Rye  Pro Easy and Works Well    Con  Expensive
Popcorn  Pro Love it better surface area and air exchange  Con  You must let it dry properly.

White millet literally you just need to measure 300grams of millet in a mason jar, add 175ml of water, close the mason jar lid and sterilize it in the PC for 90 minutes.

Ive used wheat berries. Its my preferred grain, mostly cause its cheap and smells good when you simmer it.

I like millet like Mr.Alien said (got to try that prep) as grain masters. I can easily do 1 to 20 ratio due to the many fine inoculation points & expand via G2G to wheat (Spitballjedi's rye prep works great) as It is 10.00 for 50 lbs out the door at my local feed store. Jars of spawn cost me about .10 cents + fule to run the presto and explode quickly.
