Psychedelics and running
    #26442243 - 01/19/20 07:52 PM (4 years, 28 days ago)

This is a very random question but I was wondering if there were any other semi elite to elite track distance runners that frequent this site.  I would probably be considered in the semi elite category with a mile pr hovering close to 4:05.  Since I have started using psychedelics (mainly shrooms and a little bit of acid) I have noticed what I perceive as improvements to the mental aspect of running. I’ve found they’ve helped me to control my race anxiety and have increased my love for the sport.  I know this is a shot in the dark but I was wondering if any other runners felt the same way.

That depends on the dose to be honest. I'm not a runner - but I  do bodybuild. I've tried microdosing and lifting weights and have noticed a more "in tune" feeling with my body. Able to really connect to the muscle's that I'm trying to activate. I don't do this regurarly, as I am really mindful of being able to connect with my muscle contractions.

But, this will be objective for anyone, even runners like yourself. What's your dosage been like prior to running? If it's working for you - continue to do so! Psychedelics have a crazy impact on the brain in a variety of ways.. and it differs from person to person. What works for you, may not work for someone else.

Biggest thing is for you to do a trial and error. Have your dose in the morning and do your thing, write down your mentality and your mood during your run - then next time do without. Then, do whatever works for you accordingly!

I don't run, but I do lift. I notice pyscedelics seem to make me stronger with brute strength exercises like a smith machine, but anything that requires motor skills (even stabilizing a bar while benching) I get bad at. Now of course this is on low doses, exercising with fractals in my vision is not something I've tried or ever been motivated to do... usually im just floored at that point

Lmao that's why I said about dosage. There would be a point where any big noticeable effects would turn into a non-efficient gym session while I lay on a yoga mat enjoying my music on the floor lol.

.2/.3 would be ideal for something of such. .5 is when I begin to feel some effects more than I would like.

I can't speak for running, but I skate/snowboard, mountain bike, hike, and climb.
I notice a significant increase in stamina, strength, balance, coordination, reaction time, lung capacity, proprioception... shit, just about all of my physical faculties. As mentioned, typically with low doses between 500mg and 2g.
Toward the higher end of that scale (2g), it's more of a crap shoot and I'll sometimes be cold and noodly.

I also have synovitis from lyme disease and arthritis from years of these impact sports - those symptoms nearly vanish even with microdoses (100mg+)

Speaking on microdoses - though to a lesser degree, they, too, have a positive impact on all of those physical faculties. It's one of the main therapies I take them for.

Terence McKenna alludes to this when he discusses the stoned ape hypothesis. He discusses that when man came down from the trees to the grasslands, in search of food when the climate changed, those humans that ate mushrooms had 3 evolutionary advantages. 1) low levels increase your visual accuity, and are still used to this day by for example Zulus, who take psychedelics before going into battle. In fact, they have different psychedelics for different situations they may face; lions, neighbouring tribe, long journey etc.
For completeness, the next 2 levels of increasing doseage grant you greater sexual prowess, then thirdly spiritual enlightenment (beginnings of religion?).

So check out some McKenna.

I also watched a London Real podcast a few years ago with the ex-UFC fighter Dan Hardy. He takes 5g dried cubensis at roughly monthly intervals, but on the come down goes for a run. He gets headphones on with a few choice sounds then runs. He reckons he doesn’t need To look where his feet are landing because he intuitively knows.

Mush love,
DJ Ed

Well I guess to be more clear im not actually talking about dosing and then running.  Im really talking more abut long term changes that tripping has brought to my running in terms of mental strength and appreciation for the sport.  I have done a little bit of experimenting with microdosing before track workouts and it is interesting but im not sure I would say it enhances performance.  Its just an interesting concept to me because im always looking for ways to get an edge (without cheating)  and most runners are not willing to dabble in psychedelics!

Yea for sure! Ive listened to a good bit of mcKenna and he has helped me so much to make sense of my psych experiences!  Yea while tripping running probably would not be a great idea but I have had some of my best workouts ever in the afterglow of a mushroom trip.  I just find myself to have great mental endurance in this time and I love the feeling of it.

Oh, yes. That, too, of course.

A major part of the enlightenment from psychedelics is the appreciation of self.
You magnificent machine of a body being arguably the most tangible sense of self that you have; it, of course, is a focal point of observation and admiration.
Achieving more with your body and finding fundamental intricacies in the syncopation your physiology and movements is definitely something I would consider to be a long-term side-effect of any amount of psychedelic exploration.

I and so many I know can recall their first experience with hallucinogens...
how their proportions looked
how the blood coursed through your veins
how your hair cast shadows on your skin
the wonder of breathing - deep, belly breathing
the taste of air
how the earth moved below your feet (or how your feet propelled the rotation of the earth)...

So much of that first change in perspective was simply just rediscovering the wonder of the body.

Very well written!  I feel like i am very observant to my possible muscle imbalance, my breathing and my general biomechanics and this knowledge is all very important to me as a runner.
One of my fears about tripping before I had ever tried psychs was that it would change me and make me not be driven to run anymore, but man was it the opposite!  Tripping on shrooms made me realize that running(and more specifically racing) is an expression of myself, my own kind of art.  My appreciation for the beauty of the sport has never been greater.

If you take some acid and make a loop of someone saying I’m right behind you, I’m going to get you, your ass is mine in a creepy voice it might make you break records.
