Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Caps) for New Hunters 1

Psilocybe semilanceata or Liberty Cap (named after the Phrygian headgear) is the most wide spread wild psilocybian mushroom of the world. P. semilanceata grows in north temperate areas but it has been found even in Peru, Pune, India and also at altitudes of 4000 meters in Italy. Liberty caps are about three to four times more potent than Psilocybe cubensis. Required amount for a trip is 20-40 fresh mushrooms or one to two grams dried. Effects are claimed to be very visual in high dosages and very tranquil in their effect on the body. Liberty caps grow in tall rank grasses (sedge etc.) in pasturelands, lawns, parks, fields, golf courses, alongside roads etc. attached to the roots of grass and never directly in manure (best places to look would be any pastures that have had cows, sheep etc. in the past 10 years or so). Liberty caps like cool temperatures (night temperatures <10C, day temperatures <15C) and a lot of moisture (rain). The best season is fall: from when the fall rains begin until the first freezes. Sporeprint chocolate to purple brown.
Read more about the identification keys of Psilocybe semilanceata in these sites: Some pictures: habitat
Some pictures: little magic men
For more pictures and information browse through these Mushroom Hunting threads:
NOTE: Never ID a mushroom on its photo only. This is especially true for Psilocybe semilanceata, as they come in different looks, shapes, forms and colors. Compare your finds with the keys in a mushroom guide. And remember - NEVER CONSUME UNIDENTIFIED MUSHROOMS!
P.S. This information was compiled from a number of posts found in Mushroom Hunting forum. Thanks to all the posters, photographers and good luck to You newbie hunters who are too lazy to read the FAQs and/or search the boards themselves!

Nice writeup!
>Liberty caps are about three to four times more potent than Psilocybe cubensis
Isn't this a bit too much? I'd say more like 2-3 times.

In this thread mjshroomer said: Liberty caps are about three to four times more potent than P. cubensis. one to two dried grams or 1/3 of a fresh ounce. That could be 20 to 40 mushrooms fresh. They grow in New Brunswick and in Nova Scotia and P.E. Island. They grow in Quebec. I am not too familar with Ontario so I cannot say if they are there or not. mj YEs they are cool shrooms, very visual in high dosages and very tranquil in their effect on the body. mj

Oner to two dried grams of liberty caps would be equal to 3-5 dried grams of P. cubensis. On a dry weight basis they are more potent.
Fresh liberty caps can get three off on a fresh ounce and one fresh ounce of cubes is a dose. So both Anno and I are correct in the amound t of dosage.,
And yes. This is a very nice thread started by Ivi

Also remember that both P. subfinmetaria (P. sierrare) and P. strictipes also grow in pastures and resemble liberty caps. And are macroscopically indistinguisable form them.

I live in Maine, which is pretty much the same climate as New Brunswick as it is only about 70 miles away from where I am. Why haven't I seen these little jewels around?

I have a bag of shake that has a few stems and caps that look like that. I was told they were cyans, I might have to try to get a good picture to see what people think, I guess that probably breaks the rules here, I'll read closely before attempting anything
Someone who claimed to know the picker gave them to me for free, while he was tripping on them.. Never got the nerve to eat them, I don't know if it's the not knowing or if it's fear of chocking down that shake.. had them for 5 months now.

If you read the first post you would have read; Quote:
P. semilanceata grows in north temperate areas but it has been found even in Peru, Pune, India and also at altitudes of 4000 meters in Italy.
They also grow from northern New york to Nova Scotia and northern Quebec to Nova Scotia, P.I., and New Foundland.
They are also common throughour Europe from England, etc., allt he way to Russia and probably in China.
They are also in Australia and New Zealand.

There is also a record of one quite contradictory case of fatal poisoning due to ingestion of Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Caps).

There are no llinberty caps oin Santa ruz, especially at this time of the year. But then they do not grow that far south of Oregon.
If they were there then people would have picking them for years.
