Yep, the actual computer is the size of a tangerine!

Maybe 10 years ago I read about how they somehow programmed a teaspoonful of DNA in solution to solve a very complicated problem that would've taken a roomful of computers quite a while to solve. I think the problem involved shortest paths. They didn't explain at all how the DNA was programmed or how the information was deciphered, unfortunately, but they seemed to be very excited that this would help get around the limit of miniaturization imposed by the wavelengths of EMR

I've often thought about organic computers being the successors to the current Silicon processors. After all, look at what the human brain can do!

Intriguing, yes, but it would not be availble to the public for quite a while.

The list of pros/cons to organic computers is endless.

Oh yes - decades into the future. But they'll have to come up with an alternative to the current silicon based processors sooner if they want to keep making them faster. Within ten years or so, I'd say.

Actually, 3400MHz is the highest clock speed Pentium is going to put out (Of course, Pentiums have achieved 5000+MHz with phase change cooling, and any higher is easily achieved with overclocking). Pentium 5 (Pentium V) will be based on the Pentium-M processor, which accomplishes more at a lower clock speed. Heat is a major limiting factor for the CPU's.

Look at any AMD, or the Centrino. I used to have a 1.60GHz Pentium-M Centrino which performed better than or at par with a 2.4GHz Pentium 4. Exact details unknown.

Photonic processors (as opposed to electronic) will be the breakthrough that allows for great speed increases, I expect. Photons move at the true speed of light, and not just a fraction of it like electrons.

Qauntum(sp?) are thought to be the next great leap.  Read up on them.  It looks like once we solve a few problems with them(WOW now thats an understatement) then all of our computing needs ever will be solved.

Whoops, what I meant to say was that 3400MHz may be the highest clock speed Pentium is going to put out. Nevertheless, CPU's are generating too much heat right now already. Although rumors have it that P5 "Nehalem" will be around 4-7GHz (up to 10.20GHz), that would require very impressive cooling to achieve such. Observe http://www4.tomshardware.com/cpu/20031230/. THG used liquid nitrogen to push a P4 to 5.25GHz.

I do know that their new processors will be based on the Pentium-M chip, which runs at much lower clock speeds but with equivalent performance to a Pentium 4 Northwood/Prescott chip.

By the way, Tejas and Jayhawk may have been cancelled. (Tejas being the fourth gen P4 chip, Jayhawk being the low-end Xeon processor).
