Hey guys, I am a complete newbie, my first season of hunting, but I would like to make some observations and reflections of the Blue Mountains and Oberon/Hampton area. All up, I reckon I got about 30 grams dry weight. With the Oberon/Hampton region I found much smaller fruits on long spindly stipes. I always got something but it took hard work and time. About 10% of my total findings came from this region. By far my best finds came from the upper blue mountains, often in parks with woodchipped areas. There was one spot in particular which probably accounted for 80% of all I collected - these guys were massive (I've cloned the biggest one on agar) and I had to get them ID verified just because they were so massive. Just when things started to get going well and I found a few spots, I started to notice the ground being dug up - at first I didn't know if it was destructive hunters or maybe the council destroying the patches - it was a mystery. Since that time, everywhere I had been and found subs, I keep finding the same thing - the mulch/woodchips dug up. I am wondering if anyone else has found this kind of disturbance. Since I am finding this everywhere now, I am convinced it is the work of animals. It really isn't everywhere, just where I knew there was massive amounts of healthy mycelium ready to break through. We've had major bushfire destruction of habitat, it's been winter, and generally the wildlife have been coming closer to populated areas. I don't know, but does anyone have more experience hunting the mountains who might like to comment? Cheers

In suburbia it may be bush turkeys. Lyre birds dig up the mycelium too. It's more curiosity with lyre birds turning them over and checking them out.
Bush turkeys will do it intentionally if humans have been picking them. They are that curious to check out where humans have been.
I have both where I live. They tend to do it early morning. Subs, ovoids and tasmaniana have been on their menu as far as I know. They love big Boletus species, pecking them to pieces. Russula species get turned over and aren't usually eaten.
They dig up large areas where subs fruit. It looks like the earth has been turned over with a fork exposing mycelium.
Had a ridgeback years ago that would eat large amounts of mycelium attached to bark and twigs where I collected subs. He'd act funny afterwards.
Read somewhere that cyanescens mycelium can contain 20 percent alkaloid content of the fruiting bodies. So that may explain it.
Good luck next season.

That sounds about right, makes it hard when they're so destructive. Good luck to you also for next year 👍

I always wondered if bush turkeys have got to the various mushrooms before me .. most of the places I explore are on the central coast which has a vast amount of bush turkeys roaming around.
Please excuse my ignorance, are there loads of bush turkeys around the Blue Moutains ?

Newbie here too - first season. I'm not sure if they are up that far north (do some googling) but your damage sounds lke what I am seeing - which is from feral hogs. They root with their noses making what looks like dug up holes all over, poop everywhere, and step on everything. Their prints look like deer prints but instead of coming to a point, they are wider and more round (google). Find a hunter buddy with a smoker and get to picking/hunting/eating!!

Any luck about with all this rain?
Feels like it might still be a little cold on the mid north coast, no luck for me!

Still no luck yet here in the hunter valley area nsw... Plenty of rain patches with sun through some days, waiting for those higher temps with good humidity🍄 Anyone else had luck?
