What species are you trying to grow?

I'm going to be growing cubes in a monotub.

You don't need lime then. Nor do you even need a casing. And if you want to do a casing you can do one that doesn't require any lime

I was just going off what rr has stated. I was undecided on a casing layer but he said of you ph it to 8 that helps stop trich as trich prefers acidic. Thats the reason I would want the hydrated lime so I can adjust ph. Would you not recommend a casing layer then? I thought it would help with a more even pin set and help with humidity

The casing itself might not contaminate but that doesn't do anything for the substrate
itself if there are problems there. Trich will have no problem riding along with myc
through a casing layer. I just threw out a tray where this happened - pH was about 7.7.

I don't think anyone would recommend a casing layer for cubes these days. It's just an
extra step that is deemed unnecessary by most people. If you plan on growing other species
it's worth learning how to do properly, though.

I'm in the uk and cant get hold of pickling lime. I've bought some hydrated lime which is stated 98% it has low magnesium and high calcium. I've attached a link, do you think this is okay to use in my casing layers ?

You might know these already but if not just some suggestions for alternative casing layers;

You can get a big bag of Vermiculite at homebase it makes a great casing layer (are you planning to use verm + lime?) .

You can buy Coco coir from PetsAtHome.

Also, could you post the tek you're using? I'm pretty interested in reading it, never heard of using lime before.

That hydrated lime should be fine to use.  I have some myself I throw in my coir sometimes.  It doesn't seem to do much of anything, but I like to play around.

Yeah man, fuck everything except for coir/CVG when you're growing cubes.  If you want to get fancy you could start fucking around with manure/worm castings in the coir substrate, but I think that's probably about it, unless you're way beyond hobbyist level maybe.  Most of us aren't.

Peat moss or 50/50+ is a moldy disaster waiting to happen.  Coir is the most reliable way as of today, as far as I know.

I'm gonna be using coco with a bit of verm and a cup of used coffee and a cup of gypsum for my bulk. The only reason I wanted lime was to increase the ph, nothing else. I've decided I'm not gonna use a casing now haha. The link I've added is all of rr notes, look at the parts gypsum and then hydrated lime in this link, he explains about it there.

That's a bummer, was it the spawn do you think? I've decided not to use a casing layer now as loads have said not to bother and after watching mykotek on insta he doesn't use a casing and his tubs are stacked. That itself says to me they're not needed unless of course it's a certain strain. Thanks for the info mate
